Strong for Life
Shirley Cunningham is 71 years young and volunteers her time to teach an upbeat, energetic Swing and Line Dance class every week here at CHMRSCC. She has an athletic body and mind, and has confidence in herself and her abilities. She is disciplined and committed to living a healthy lifestyle, enjoying good nutrition, consistent exercise programs, and encourages anyone who is able to get out and participate in making these healthy life choices.
Not only is Ms. Shirley a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother, and one of our teachers, she is also a community volunteer, a model, and she was Ms. Senior Mobile 2005.
The most incredible thing to note about Ms. Shirley is that she is a Power Lifter, and she holds the title of USPF Masters National, American, and New York State Championships. She has broken records throughout the state of Alabama in squat lift and dead lifts including championship wins and medaling in her age group as well as her weight class. Her goal is to make a difference in the lives of others, and to live a life that is an example to all senior adults to encourage healthy living as well as the desire to make an impression on the lives of young girls and women in the community. She always says "I am not about to slow down!;" she is always on the go, and always full of energy, and she will outwork anyone who challenges her.
Ms. Shirley is an asset to our community center, and she has a positive impact on the people she comes into contact with on a daily basis whether in competition or as a teacher and role model.
