                           Sandra Clark

With more than 20 years of training experience in Silicon Valley, Sandra Clark now provides individuals and companies with professional, customized LinkedIn workshops and coaching. She works with individuals from a variety of industries-from high tech to service businesses-to create and manage their LinkedIn presence. She also speaks frequently about LinkedIn to professional organizations in Silicon Valley. (Please Note: Sandra is not officially affiliated with the actual company.)

Having a personal brand is a critical component in the modern professional's life. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for growing that personal brand, finding employment and building a career. Once you create a powerful LinkedIn profile that is attractive to potential employers, you can then use that profile to build your network and add value to your company.

In this practical and informative presentation, you will learn how to use the world's largest business network to effectively represent yourself both passively if someone you meet looks at your profile and actively to gain attention from recruiters and employers. You will see how LinkedIn can help you enhance your personal brand and promote your expertise.

You may reach Sandra via email Sandra at linkedinmentoring.com

THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Eileen Perry
AFWA - Silicon Valley Chapter President

Happy April! Hope everyone had a great Easter Holiday. April is the month we give out our scholarship awards to local students studying in accounting or finance. We are given the opportunity to hand out scholarships each year due to our generous sponsors. Participation and support of our highly valued sponsors is integral to the success of our scholarship program! If you are interested in more details and the benefits of being a sponsor for our 10th annual Spring Gala in May, please don't hesitate to contact Edronda Guiriba at (408) 250-9552 or email her at [email protected]. Please confirm as soon as possible to maximize your exposure but, no later than May 10, 2016. Being a past recipient of our local scholarship program, I can say how beneficial it is to receive one. I encourage anyone who may not have the ability to sponsor to consider donating which can be done via our website (http://www.afwasiliconvalley.org/sponsors.html) by clicking the green, "donate now" icon at the top of the screen.

If you cannot donate or sponsor, simply reaching out to someone who you feel may benefit from the exposure of being a sponsor for our gala this year is just as beneficial. If you would like more information to provide someone you feel might benefit in being a sponsor, please feel free to contact Edronda as well.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation! Hope to see you at our scholarship awards dinner on April 26th and or our 10th Annual Spring Gala May 24th!

Seven Key Attributes of Highly Promotable People

By Hank Boyer

As an employee - whether part-time, full-time, contract or otherwise - your day-to-day performance places you in one of two categories: promotable or not promotable. Getting a promotion starts months (or years) before the promotion date.

What makes someone promotable? Here are seven attr ibutes of highly promotable people.

1. Doers, not talkers
2. Solvers, not excuse-makers
3. Selfless, not selfish
4. Respectful, not inconsiderate
5. Outward focused, not self-focused
6. Givers, not takers
7. Integrity and trust, not questionable motives

How To Avoid Hiring Mistakes and High Cost of Bad Hire

Faced with a shortage of highly skilled accounting and finance talent, hiring in the finance sector right now is  challenging at best. But even though you have to act fast to land your top candidate, you shouldn't be hasty.

The costs of a bad hire are high. A recent  Robert Half survey shows that the top two effects of hiring mistakes are decreased staff morale (39 percent) and lost productivity (34 percent). Monetary costs, cited by one in four respondents, came in at third place.

It's important to get it right the first time around. Here are some tips for avoiding hiring mistakes:

  • Write spot-on job ads
  • Vet the applications
  • Do a phone screening
  • Bring in top candidates
  • Check references
  • Check backgrounds
