Public-Private Partnership To Address Housing Needs
|
Our community has been working to address the housing needs for those at-risk of losing their housing or are already experiencing homelessness. One of the fastest growing segments of those experiencing housing challenges are our senior community. While once considered a place where elders could live out their retirement, Santa Cruz County is now one of the most expensive communities in the country for its size.
Fortunately there are community leaders like the St. Stephens Lutheran Church, on Soquel Avenue, who decided to use their resources to help provide housing for this important segment of our county family. The congregation went through an internal process to determine how to best use their property directly behind the church and backing up to 7th Avenue. Through their work with COPA (Community Organized for Relational Power and Action) they identified the need to provide permanently supportive housing for seniors in our community. They approached the county and MidPen Housing to help develop their plans. With the County facing elimination of our Redevelopment Agency, we voted to put $5.3 million to help support the project. From there, MidPen worked to secure additional tax credit financing.
On April 28th, the church will host a groundbreaking for a 40-unit affordable (60% AMI and below) housing complex that includes studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and also includes a community kitchen, library and laundry facility. The project will take about 12 months to complete and seniors should hopefully be able to move in by late spring 2017. If you are interested in living at St. Stephens, you can use the following link on MidPen's website:

Join me in congratulating the congregation of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church for their foresight and commitment to our community. With their help we can provide good quality, affordable housing for our seniors.

Community Involvement in Parks
|
County Parks are a critical part of our community. I try to look for new ideas to improve and expand our park system whenever possible. Recently two opportunities have presented themselves for two parks in the district, and I am partnering with the County Parks Department to hear your input on what you would like to see happen in your neighborhood parks.
A group of community members recently approached the County with a proposal to reconfigure some of the tennis/basketball courts to include pickleball at Brommer St. Park. Pickleball is
is a
racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. On April 18th we will host a meeting where the Parks Department will present various proposals to the public. The Santa Cruz pickleball group has been playing at the park regularly and now there is a possibility to help transform the tennis courts to include one of the first dedicated pickleball courts in the County. Please come and find out what this is all about and provide feedback for uses at Brommer Street Park.
On April 26th we will be holding a meeting to discuss interim development of the Farm Park and Community Center located at Soquel Avenue and Cunnison Lane. This long planned park has been stymied by the loss of redevelopment funds. The Community Garden was added last year and recently the County has acquired the pieces of a bridge to cross the creek and riparian corridor. Once installed, the bridge will provide increased access for the neighborhood by connecting the Tee Street side of the park with the Soquel & Cunnison Lane portion. We are interested in hearing from the public about other elements that we could add to the park site. While funding does not exist for all that was envisioned for the park at this time, helping identify priorities would be useful for the Parks Department. Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and Native Animal Rescue of Santa Cruz County are teaming up to produce Santa Cruz County's first annual self- guided Catio Tour. Catios (cat + patio = catio) are outdoor enclosures where cats can enjoy the outdoors and still be safefrom predators. And just as important, birds can be safe from roaming cats.
