Book Drive for the Children of New American Students and Clients
International Institute of Minnesota
Date/Time: Now through Thursday, April 20. We can only accept books during this time since we don't have space onsite to store them. Please drop off your new or gently used children's books at the front desk between 9am and 5pm, Monday - Friday

Each year at the beginning of March, school children kick off National Reading Month by celebrating the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss. You and your family can help make a difference by collecting and donating books for New American children. Please note: we are only collecting children's books.

Mentor a Child
Kids 'n Kinship

Location: Your home or the community.
Kids 'n Kinship matches volunteer mentor families, couples, & individuals with youth ages 5-16 in need of additional positive role models for fun and enriching weekly activities. Mentoring Works! Please consider stepping forward today to mentor a child with your family. We are based in Dakota County and have served families in Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville & Rosemount for 44 years. Matches are made based on compatible personalities, ages and interests as well as preferences of both volunteer family and the youth and parent/guardian. Our families say that mentoring together ensures they have weekly family time and that it's easy to include another child with the family activity, whether it's a board game, sledding, a trip to a park, or going to the zoo or a museum. We offer discounted passes to area attractions to make activities more affordable, a 45-minute information session, a 2-hour training session, as well as ongoing training and support. We ask mentors and mentees to commit to a year's time together in order to build their relationship; however, many of our matches become lifelong friendships and our average match is about 3 years. Please consider being a mentor to a child - it is one of the most challenging and rewarding ways to volunteer!
Ages: Mentors are families, couples, or individuals over 21
Time Commitment: One to four hours per week, on your own time (very flexible scheduling: can be weekends, evenings or after school)

Learn and Deliver Meals With Your Family!
Meals on Wheels
Date/Time: Volunteer one hour during lunchtime, Monday through Friday. Your family can volunteer weekly, monthly, or on a schedule that works for you.
Location: With over thirty neighborhood sites throughout the Twin Cities, you can easily be connected with a delivery site near your home!
Delivering Meals on Wheels with your children or grandchildren is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time as a family and pass on the values of kindness, compassion, and civic responsibility by helping seniors and individuals with disabilities in your community. Whether you have infants or teenagers, you can make a contribution together to improve your community. Delivering meals involves driving to the program site, picking up, and delivering eight to ten meals. It takes about an hour, and you can choose a program site near your home. The amount you socialize with the clients is dependent on the volunteer and the client.
Ages: Families are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer
Time Commitment: About an hour at lunchtime

Celebrate Earth Day!

It's easy to get involved in Earth Day Cleanup 2017. The goal of Earth Day Cleanup is to provide a volunteer experience and environmental education to Minneapolis residents and park users. Earth Day Cleanup is held at several sites throughout the City of Minneapolis. In past years, volunteers have removed more than 140,000 pounds of garbage from Minneapolis parks. A site coordinator will give you gloves and bags, and tell you where to go and where to leave the trash. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, though there will be some gloves available for volunteers who need them. Check in at the registration table to get a bag and instructions indicating where to pick up and leave trash. A volunteer coordinator will be at each site to assist volunteers and answer any questions.
Ages: Open to all ages
Time Commitment: Up to two and one-half hours. Volunteers can arrive at anytime between 9:30 and noon. No pre-registration is required.

Earth Day at Bushaway Road
Great River Greening
Date/Time: Saturday, April 22, 8:30am - noon
Location: Bushaway Road, McGinty and Bushaway, Wayzata
Come out to this Earth Day Community Event to plant more than 1,700 trees and perennials as part of the Bushaway Road/Highway 101 reconstruction. This exciting event will engage 200 volunteers of all ages in landscaping a two-mile stretch of this historic scenic roadway, Wayzata's eastern gateway to the Lake Minnetonka experience. Join other volunteers in planting to help restore our native landscape and secure the legacy of Minnesota land and waters.
Ages: Families are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany children under 12.

2017 Citywide Spring Cleanup

Each year, hundreds of volunteers gather across Saint Paul for the Citywide Spring Cleanup to pick up garbage that has recently become exposed due to the melting snow. With the help of volunteers, we can remove the trash that accumulates in these natural areas harming wildlife, polluting lakes and rivers and detracting from the beauty of our community. This event is a fun and effective way to improve the natural environment in our local community.
Ages: Everyone can participate
Time Commitment: Up to two and one-half hours

Pre-register online, and then drop by your selected cleanup site any time between 9 and 11:30 am, on Saturday, April 22nd to pick up bags, gloves and snacks, and meet your neighbors and community members. Projects to Help Homeless Youth

The mission of The Link is to build a supportive community network that strengthens and transforms the lives of youth and their families through education, advocacy, housing and a dynamic network of social services. Volunteers can help youth experiencing homelessness by choosing one or more of these projects:
Welcome Home Kits: These kits are needed for youth experiencing homelessness who are preparing to move into their first apartment. Kits typically consist of a laundry basket filled with a combination of: kitchen and bath towels, a shower curtain, twin XL bedding, dishes, pots and pans, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, etc. Local dollar stores usually have great deals on many of the above items. A complete kit can be made for about $50.
Quarter Drive: Youth who move into their first apartment after experiencing homelessness often cannot afford to do their laundry. Assemble quarters into $3 baggies to help youth keep up with laundry.
Tie Blankets: Youth experiencing homelessness and sexual exploitation often go without basic necessities. Help keep them warm by assembling tie blankets for youth! A standard blanket is 1.5 yards long with fleece fabric. Blanket cost varies depending on fabric used, typically it costs around $10 per blanket. Click

Location: Arc's Value Village has
locations in Bloomington, Brooklyn Center, New Hope, Richfield & St. Paul
Volunteers help unpack, sort, tag/sticker donations; hang & tag clothing; and stock the sales floor. Every year, our stores provide over a million dollars for The Arc Greater Twin Cities' programs that help adults and children with disabilities and our community.
Ages: Families with children 10 and older are welcome to volunteer.
Time Commitment: Volunteer shifts are two or three hours. You can volunteer one-time or on an ongoing basis

Minneapolis Earth Day Cleanup
Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR)
Date/Time: Saturday, April 22, 9:30am - noon
Location: E 36th St & W River Parkway or E 44th St & W River Parkway, Minneapolis
This family-friendly Earth Day tradition provides an excellent opportunity to get outside and work together to help improve this treasured area. Friends of the Mississippi River have returned to this site year after year and have noticed a dramatic improvement to the area thanks to dedicated volunteers like you! FMR will provide all of the supplies. However, if you have your own gloves feel free to bring them along. Sturdy shoes are strongly suggested as well as dressing for the weather; layers are encouraged. To participate, simply show up at either E 36th St & W River Parkway or E 44th St & W River Parkway to sign-in with FMR staff.

Rake the Leaves Spring Yard Cleanup
HOME Program of Senior Community Services (SCS)
Date/Time: Seasonal: starting late March (depending upon the weather). Cleanup can be scheduled on either weekdays or weekends.
Location: Exact location TBD in Minneapolis or suburban Hennepin County, depends upon where the senior lives
Volunteers are needed to help with spring yard cleanup for seniors in Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County. Improve your health while helping a senior citizen remain independent in their home. You choose the date and time to rake and clean up the yard.
Ages: Families with children ages seven and older. Feel free to sign up multiple times.

Spring Yard Clean-up!

Location: Dakota County Area
Grab your rakes and gloves and invite your friends, families and co-workers to help an older homeowner clean up their yard this spring. Volunteers play a crucial role in helping older homeowners in Dakota County maintain a sense of pride in their property. This is a great opportunity for families to share in the experience of giving back to the community.
Ages: Families of all ages are welcome to participate

Special Olympics MN Sports Camp

Camp Courage in Maple Lake, MN
Families will assist Special Olympics athletes within a traditional summer camp experience. During the morning sessions, campers will attend a sports focused area to enhance their skills in either bocce ball, basketball, flag football, or poly hockey. The rest of the day will be spent participating in camp activities: tie-dye, archery, fishing, zip-line, and more!

Families will assist adult campers with physical disabilities and staff members during ten days of fun camp activities. Campers will be able to customize their week by choosing activities that challenge and interest them, including hiking trails, accessible high ropes course and zip-line, swimming, tubing, fishing, casino night, and so much more!
