Electric Shock Drowning Prevention

Unknowingly, many swimmers and boat and marina operators place themselves in the face of danger by swimming near electric-powered boats and docks.

Even a low level of electric current in the water can be extremely hazardous or fatal to a swimmer - especially in freshwater, where experts say the voltage will "take a shortcut" through the human body.

You can help prevent this by:
  • Using only "UL-Marine-Listed" shore or marine power cords, plugs, receptacles and extension cords
  • Using a plastic ladder, rather than a metal one, so it won't help transfer electricity into the water.
  • Check all of the wiring around your dock, including your ground fault circuit breaker.
  • Purchase a Dock Lifeguard, a device that detects electricity on your dock and in the water around your dock.
  • If you start to feel a tingle in the water, swim away from the dock, which is where most electrical issues occur.
You can look for "UL-Marine-Listed shore or marine power cords and the Dock Lifeguard at any Home Depot near you.
