What is Information ?
What is life? It is not easy to define either at any detailed level! One must say just what the simplest form physically does to be alive. Then one must say what life must do to reproduce as well. A large array of essential elements must be there in the first living cell right from the beginning. The more science has learned about this the more unfathomably complex this has become.
In 1859 it was easy for Darwin and his followers to imagine cells as simple chemical blobs might start living spontaneously. They knew nothing of what living cells do to live or reproduce. It is easy to imagine chemical blobs getting bigger until surface tension make these blobs split in two. But that kind of imagination was a product of gross ignorance. Today science knows living cells to be far more complex than mankind has ever designed or built - or even conceived.

Science has done a lot to understand information processing machines. Computers, programmable machines and robots center on this kind of information science. The highest level of this programming is called "artificial intelligence" and is displayed in self-driving cars. But that is still just programmed responses to an array of inputs from sensors. Experimental work with computers have also done some amazing things with a sort of programmed intuitive shortcut around rigorous programmed instructions. Others use a limited degree of automated learning of what responses produce some desired result. The current results can be amazing, surprising, or scary.

processing of that information occurs on at least five different dimensional levels. Epigenetic markers on the surface of the DNA turn genes on or off in response to the chemical and biological environment both internal and external to the organism. The immense jumble of DNA inside a cell somehow brings the right widely spaced portions into contact to produce the correct code for proteins. Those codes are used by an array of other molecular machines to produce the protein molecules the DNA demands. Then molecular trucks called "kinesin" carry proteins from where they are made as instructed by DNA to where they are needed in the cell. The kinesin travel on microtubules, 3-D roadway networks, that apparently self-assemble as needed for the kinesin to travel on to their destination. All of this is just the beginning and there are still a multitude of deep mysteries involved.

The ability of self-reproduction had to be there from the first living cell and that represents many more levels of complexity During the cell division process human DNA is bound up in the twenty-three chromosomes commonly depicted on microscope slides. So, what is controlling the cell division process? Are the chemical mechanisms of DNA the whole story?

Science is still trying to understand the information content of these codes. But more basically, what is information? Where does the information contained in the codes come from? The only observed source of information is intelligence. Where do the information processing mechanisms come from to implement the information content in physical reality? Still further, what is consciousness? How does it work? Where does it come from? What is intelligence and where does it come from? Materialistic science is far from understanding!
Can one dare ask what is spirit? How does that work? What is faith? Of course, the materialists must deny that these even exist. So, they must also insist that all ideas of progressive development like evolution must be random and purposeless. But is that driven by science?
At the April 6th GHCA meeting Robert Brayton will enlighten this subject matter with his talk titled Designer Genes and Information. He will examine the inner workings of the molecular information system of the living cell.
