April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol use in excess has an impact on individuals that go beyond alcohol dependence. According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use, including underage drinking and binge drinking, can lead to increased risk of health problems such as injuries, violence, liver disease, and cancer (CDC, 2014).

An effective intervention to prevent excessive drinking and related harms and costs includes increasing the cost of alcohol. The Iowa wholesale beer tax currently ranks as one of the lowest in the US, and the proposed increase would only put Iowa into the middle range. State wholesale taxes in the US range from 2 cents to $1.29/gallon. Iowa's beer tax of 19 cents/gallon has not changed in 31 years. Over that same time, all costs, including treatment and healthcare costs to tax payers for alcohol abuse have increased significantly. Brochures available for coalitions

It is important to get the general public up to speed on what we know regarding safety issues with marijuana and Rx drugs in particular. AC4C has worked with state partners to produce 10,000 brochures for statewide distribution. The funds were provided through a ODCP- JAG Diversion grant and are available upon request. National Prevention Week

National Prevention Week is a SAMHSA-sponsored annual health observance dedicated to increasing the prevention of substance use and promotion of mental health. The observance brings individuals, organizations, coalitions, states, and communities together through local events to raise awareness about the importance of preventing substance use and mental disorders. The events will be held nationally May 14th - 20th.
