NEWS & NOTES   Your connection to True Friends April 24, 2015
Rain, snow or shine, summer camp is on its way! We can tell campers are excited because we have 300 more applications right now than this time last year. Plus, more than half of our guests are using online registration. As you may know, people are able to update their camper records online and save that information for future sessions. We're happy to see many new people coming to True Friends. If campers haven't made plans yet, we're urging them to select their sessions before they're full. There is still time to sign up for classic camp or try one of our 12 new programs. Find our catalog and register online here!

Our sites are active with Conference & Retreat guests, volunteer groups and weekend Respite campers. Among the activities are updates to our facilities. Our maintenance team, dedicated volunteers and generous donors work on projects of all sizes throughout the year. Simple things like deck, fence and walking path repair are subtle, but important for safety. Upgrades like a new low ropes course and archery range at Camp Courage North, plus additional fishing piers at Camp Courage and Camp Friendship are just a sample of the improvements True Friends has underway. We'll share more in our next edition.

True Strides StoryCamperStory
Meet Maddie, a client of our True Strides hippotherapy program. Hippotherapy is occupational or physical therapy that utilizes a horse in the treatment.

"Miss Maddie has been a poster child for riding therapy from the first day we met her," said Shari Mangas, Director of True Strides. "She always tries her very best at everything and with a smile."

Maddie was born with a complex heart anomaly. After five open heart surgeries and almost her entire first year spent in the hospital, Maddie was very weak. Maddie started her hippotherapy at age three.

During a recent lesson, Maddy wowed the crowd while working on her postural responses! Maddie's core and midline orientation have improved so much that internally she knows she can do this. Here is one example of the many mini miracles that make us smile every day:

Maddie: "Stand up!"
Shari (True Strides Director): "Use a sentence"
Maddie: " I want to stand up now, please!"

Read more about Maddie's story here.

Our True Strides program provides hippotherapy and therapeutic riding services as well as recreational riding through our summer Horsing Around camp programs. Learn more here.

A Month of Sharing Stories!

With volunteers as the backbone of our organization, we were sure to celebrate National Volunteer Week earlier this month. It's the perfect time to thank True Friends volunteers for their contributions and support. There are so many ways volunteers make a difference. See some of them featured here!

The National Charity League, one of True Friends' largest volunteer community partners, hosted our President & CEO Ed Stracke at their annual awards ceremony where Ed presented the group with the distinguished President's Volunteer Service Award.

Reflecting on their time at camp, here is what a mother/daughter duo had to say about their volunteer experience:

"All it takes is one interaction with a camper, a staff member, another volunteer and you are hooked. It certainly didn't take long for me to realize how remarkable my campers were and how much I cared about them."  -Jan, MLC mother

"Having a disability does not define who someone is. Although I was only able to spend six days with my campers, I feel as though I was able to leave a long lasting impact on them. I am so honored to be able to help with something as remarkable as True Friends. It's one of the many ways I can fulfill my desire to help people."  -Maddie, MLC daughter

Scholarships give many campers the opportunity for life-changing experiences at True Friends. We have needs-based scholarship funds available for specific campers thanks to the following generous donor groups. Click the links to read even more about the great work they do.

Anyone, ages five and up, who could benefit from a camp program, should register and apply for financial assistance to be considered for a scholarship.  True Friends is committed to partnering with caring organizations to make camp a reality for individuals of all abilities.

GIVING TIP #33

Many people believe they need to be wealthy to make a legacy gift. In fact, most legacy gifts are made by everyday people who want to make a difference. A simple way is to designate True Friends and other favorite causes as percentage beneficiaries in your retirement plans such as your 403B, 401K or IRA.  Contact your retirement plan administrator today and/or for more information, call John LeBlanc at 952-697-2281.
