Odessa Chamber Awarded the ECISD 2015-2016 Partner of the Year
On Thursday, April 21, Ector County ISD named the Odessa Chamber of Commerce the 2015-2016 Outstanding Partner of the Year. Each year, ECISD departments and campuses nominate their best partners. Partners are businesses or community organizations that volunteer their time, energy, and expertise.

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce was nominated by the ECISD professional development for its annual new teacher welcome breakfast in August. Each year, the Chamber welcomes hundreds of new teachers to the local community. Teachers can make connections with businesses, banks, churches and other organizations immediately because of this powerful event.

At the welcome reception, teachers can find local physicians to care for their families, places to build a home, and much more. This immediate acceptance in Odessa helps us retain teachers to become permanently part of our of the ECISD family.

"The Chamber value's education and stands ready to support ECISD by mobilizing its network of volunteers," said Mike George, CEO and President of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. "The new teacher welcome breakfast is one way for the Chamber and its volunteers to demonstrate how much they value education." "Local businesses are the beneficiary of ECISD's work product by providing well educated and skilled students prepared to go on to college or enter the workforce."

Saulsbury Industries Moves Forward with Nuclear Plant

Earlier this month, Saulsbury was awarded its first extension to the current maintenance and modification contract (MMC), which extends the contract to the end of 2018.
This project serves as an integral part of Saulsbury's overall nuclear strategy that includes maintenance services, modifications, capital projects, and decommissioning services.

Saulsbury Industries is one of Odessa's major private employers whose focal point in recent years was natural gas processing plants. Over the years, the surge in demand for natural gas processing plants helped Saulsbury Industries more than double in size, but company officials sought to diversify into other sectors such as the nuclear industry.

Saulsbury continues to expand its nuclear business, currently serving clients in South Carolina, Georgia, California and Louisiana.

"We at Saulsbury Industries are excited for the opportunity to continue our work with the VC Summer team in providing a high level of skilled personnel to provide high quality maintenance and modification services. Our experienced team is entirely committed to the safety and success of VC Summer," said Rick Graves, CEO for Saulsbury Industries.

Chris Kyle Memorial Breaks Ground
The 2,800 square-foot plaza in honor of Chris Kyle broke ground last week, starting its first round of construction. Foundation for the statue has been placed, and phase two of construction is scheduled to begin soon.

"The goal is for the setting to be a healing and peaceful place for veterans and their families receiving care at the medical center, and those citizens who want to stop by and take a moment in honor of Chris and all those who serve," said Taya Kyle, wife of war veteran Chris Kyle.

Recruited to build the Chris Kyle sculpture is Vic Payne, a second generation sculpture and world renowned artist. Last week, Taya made a trip to Wyoming to visit with Payne and check on the progress of the sculpture.

"Being in Vic's studio was emotional and moving," said Taya. "We are so honored to have his extraordinary talent on the sculpture of Chris, planned for a beautiful setting in Odessa, Texas outside of a veteran's hospital."

Taya went on to say that Payne is a man who cares deeply for detail and nuance, and it clearly shows in his work. Throughout the past 20 years, Payne has developed sculptures of various sizes, and has been commissioned to create numerous monumental sculptures for corporations, municipalities, and private collectors. Led by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Odessa Community Foundation, the Chris Kyle Memorial Plaza project is an effort driven by fundraising. The unveiling is scheduled to take place sometime in July, in which some of Chris Kyle's family is anticipated to attend.

"The project committee's goal has been for the sculpture and memorial plaza to not just be an Odessa or Texas project, but rather a memorial to a true American hero that the United States of America can stand behind proudly," said Mike George, CEO/President of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce.

The Chris Kyle Memorial Plaza is still seeking donations to start phase two of construction.
