Lessons from Jimmy Carter
Habitat for Humanity International held it's 2017 Global Conference in Atlanta, GA last week. Unfortunately, we were not able to attend, but we followed along thanks to the wonders of the hashtag #everyhabitathand. You too can see highlights and recaps of the event that drew together 2,500 Habitat representatives from all over the globe by searching that hashtag.

Two of the best and most famous Habitat supporters are former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter. Attendants of the conference had the privilege of hearing from this amazing couple, and I wanted to share one part of their message with you. As President Carter reflected upon the massive increase in the number of houses built from his first year as a Habitat volunteer to this past year, he had this to say about the growth he has witnessed in his 35 years of support:

"[It's] not because a former president and his wife worked with Habitat. It is such a great organization within itself. It gives everybody a chance to gain. The homeowners gain. The donors gain. The people who help build a house with us as volunteers gain. And we have gained perhaps the most because our life has been enriched by Habitat as we have tried to help enrich people as they move into their homes."

Habitat is a community endeavor. It takes a multitude of people to do what we do. We have family partners, business partners, volunteers, donors, supporters - just to name a few. No matter where you land in the process of helping us create a world where everyone has a decent place to live, you are important to us and our community.

Happy April,
Tiffany

A Time for Farewells
SCVH Says Farewell to Staff Members

Life is full of 'hellos' and 'goodbyes' and SCVH is not exempt. After 3 years of dedication to SCVH, associate director Jim Cooper has decided to enter that period in life called retirement. We thank him for all his hard work and service to Habitat, and wish him well in the next stage of life!

Here is what Jim has to say about his time with SCVH and his retirement: "Even with planning, retirement sneaks up on you. So March 31st, my last day with SCVH was bittersweet. I've thoroughly enjoyed my past three years and the chance to work with an outstanding group of staff, board, volunteers and family partners. It has been a privilege to be part of the Eco Village project and share in it's achievement. I recognize that I'm retiring as affordable housing is entering a time of great challenge. I wish everyone at SCVH the very best and thanks for all you do to create sustainable affordable homes."

We also say goodbye to Dean Monroe.  Dean wrapped up his time with Habitat at the end of March  and we wish him well in all that he pursues next on his journey.

Looking Forward
Homeowner Applications

Applications for home ownership closed on March 31st. We received quite a number of applications and our Family Selection Committee is currently reviewing all the applications. Thank you to everyone who helped to spread the world about applications and to all those applied. Our family partners are essential to our work at Habitat and we look forward to beginning the road to home ownership with new families.
Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is being celebrated around the globe on April 22nd, 2017. SCVH has a continued commitment to provide opportunities for affordable home ownership that are also sustainable, energy-efficient, and utilize green technologies. While these terms seem quite technical, not all green technologies have to be complicated or advanced. In conjunction with Habitat ReStores, Habitat for Humanity seeks to reduce the amount of materials in landfills each year by reselling usable construction materials, household goods, furniture, and much more. We attempt to reuse materials as often as possible as one part of reducing our environmental impact on this earth. Celebrate Earth Day with us by stopping by the Roberts ReStore to shop our selection of quality items and support the our mission in the process.

Are you looking for other ways to celebrate Earth Day this year? Join the community in a discussion around environmental stewardship, poverty, and the work being done right here in our community on Thursday, April 20th. Learn from a regional expert, Father Bud Grant, and visit with local organizations working to make our community stronger together. The event is FREE and is being hosted with the generosity of a group of River Falls churches. SCVH will be present, so stop by, strike up a conversation, and learn how you can get involved with Habitat!
