Raised Bed Workshop
Thursday, April 7th at 5:30pm

A raised bed is a great way to garden. It can help beginners grow like a pro and it is easily managed, whether you are planting for the first time or have been gardening for years. There are many styles to choose from and a raised bed doesn't have to be elaborate to work well.

The class will learn how to build an inexpensive raised bed. They will also learn about the soil and fertilizer needs as well as the kinds of plants that grow well in a raised bed.

This workshop is free but pre-registration would be appreciated. Please call our office at 828-764-9480

Ernie Mack Reed Award
for Community Service

The Burke County Cattlemen's Association (BCCA) held their annual meeting on March 10, 2016.  Each year, the association presents the Ernie Mack Reed award in honor of BCCA past president Ernie Reed.

This year the award went to Jack Gragg.  A lifelong resident of Burke County, Jack purchased land with wife Barbara and moved to the current location in 1963. Here Jack farmed, primarily corn, and raised beef cattle for many years. In the 1980's, Jack began to sell feed and fertilizer, which transformed into Gragg's Farm Supply. After Barbara's death in 2002, Gragg Farm Supply became a partnership with sons Randy and Chris, serving the needs of Burke County farmers from tire and spreader service, to fertilizer, pesticides, livestock and fencing supplies along with custom feed, a market for local grain and farm equipment.

Container Gardening
Saturday, April 23rd at 10:00am
Ace Hardware in Morganton

Container gardening can provide solutions to many common gardening problems. Weed control is much simpler, containers are easier to water and can be located close to a water source. With the unlimited sizes and styles of pots, the sky's the limit. Containers aren't just for flowers; many vegetables can be grown successfully in containers as well.

Attend the container gardening workshop to learn more about growing plants in containers.  Topics will include which plants work best in containers, choosing the right size container, and which plants to combine to create a spectacular container garden.
