April Greetings, Music Time Academy Students & Parents!

We hope that everyone is enjoying the lovely Spring time so far! However, let's still hope for some rain to fall before this drought gets any more serious. In the meantime, please help us encourage every person to do his or her part in water conservation. Alas, I digress...back to the music...

WHO'S READY FOR THE SPRING CONCERT?!

We have 2 big concerts extravaganzas every year, when the Music Time Academy family of students, parents and staff join together to bring an epic afternoon of live music to the community. This year's Spring Concert is coming up in only a few weeks, on SUNDAY, MAY 17TH! It is not too late to sign up (deadline is April 30th). Do remember:

YOU MUST SIGN-UP WITH THE OFFICE, NOT JUST WITH YOUR TEACHER!

BUT  WAIT, WHAT IS WITH ALL THIS TALK ABOUT 6 MONTHS OF FREE LESSONS OR AN iPAD MINI?

Thanks for asking! We'll get to that, if you keep on reading. I'll give you a little hint though - it involves practicing your instrument.

Instrument: Guitar
Teacher: Cory
Age: 13
Grade: 8th
School: Hart Middle School
Student Since: September 2014
Hobbies (besides practicing): Listening to music, reading

Although she has wanted to play for a long time, Lasya only recently began to learn the guitar here at Music Time Academy. We could not be more thrilled that she found us online, and that her instructor, Cory, had the opportunity to help her begin building a strong (and hopefully lifelong) relationship with music. It is always thrilling and inspiring to welcome students like Lasya to our community - students that are eager to learn, and that truly love music.

Lasya's love of music is clear from not only her drive to practice the guitar on a daily basis, but also from her enjoyment of listening to music (one of the most important factors in learning an instrument), and her excitement to perform at any and all possible times. According to her mother, Lasya has made a habit of not only regularly performing for the family at home, but also performing (over the phone) for her grandmother & aunt in India. She's already an international superstar! Great work, Lasya. Keep it up!

Do you know a current Music Time Academy student with a newsworthy musical story or accomplishment from the past month that should be featured? If so, please fill out our online nomination form by following this link:  STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOMINATION FORM
Teacher Feature
This month we are highlighting Nicholas James Lyon-Wright, another one of our highly skilled, multi-instrumentalist instructors. Nick teaches piano, voice, guitar and bass at Music Time Academy on Mondays & Tuesdays. We are honored that he has been part of our staff since 2012.

The son of a musician, Nick was fortunate to learn many important lessons from his father. Not only did he teach him his first guitar chords around the age of seven, Nick's father also imparted some fundamental wisdom to him that played a formative roll in his developing musicianship: that the song (a tasteful melody) is always more important than speed or technical difficulty. This philosophy continues to resonate for Nick in both performance and teaching  of music.

Although he had the benefit of growing up in a musical household and experimenting with piano, guitar, and voice at a young age, Nick did not get serious about music until his teenage years. With encouragement from his father, Nick expanded upon his guitar playing and began singing harmonies. He attended Cal State University East Bay (one of the most highly regarded music programs in the Bay Area), earning a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance, but also focusing on developing his piano skills. Several of Nick's A Capella vocal arrangements have been performed by Cal State East Bay Ensembles and Oakland Youth Chorus.

Nick has performed with a variety of bands, including Dream Tellers (alongside fellow Music Time Academy instructor Xavier Guerrero), The Purple Sages, Uncommon Sense, and Common Bliss. He continues to actively gig in the Bay Area, and is excited to have his first performance with a new project, Room For Dream, next Thursday in Oakland.
