President's Note

Hello Friends,

Our Annual Spring Show is just around the corner! Boy, did that sneak up on us. Hope you are making progress on your art work. Reminder, the deadline to enter is Friday, April 6th! I can be a little lenient, so if you need more time please let me know so I know to plan for it.

Please do think about donating a 5x7 piece of art work for GALA's Off the Wall. Proceeds will go towards opening our gallery this year. Also, consider donating something for our Raffle Table. Bring all donated pieces to the Drop Off.

Remember that we will have live music during all three days of our show and we will have three art demonstrations, so come back and enjoy all this wonderful talent!

We are always looking for help during the show, help with setup and take down, so get in touch with me.

I hope you will also enter our Paint the Town art show with Gallery Sitka in July.

We plan to open the new art gallery in August with an art show. So, we are asking for you to register and chose only two pieces of your best work for our Grand Opening. Watch for Call for Entries soon! We are also planning a photography show and a felting workshop in the Fall. All these events will be in our new gallery space. We are getting excited!

Do you want to be a part of the gallery and join our Art Gallery Committee? We need a few key people to help with deciding what days the art gallery should be open, what the hours will be, maintaining a volunteer schedule of who will help in the gallery, and help with scheduling artists to do solo shows, classes, and workshops. We will also have a children's corner where children will be able to do hands-on activities.  It's going to be fun so give me a call at 978-407-1419 if you'd like to help.

I want to thank those who became new clients of H&R Block and mentioned GALA as your non-profit organization. So far we have earned $240. There is still time for us to earn additional funds simply by referring a new client to H&R Block to complete and file their 2017 tax return between now and April 17, 2018.

Lastly, I would like to give a warm thank you to the Massachusetts Cultural Council this year! We applied for grants to help support our Spring Show and for materials to plan children workshops in our new gallery. Thank you to the LCCs of Gardner, Winchendon, Templeton, and Ashburnham. Without the LCCs it would be difficult to do these free events for the public. Thank you for supporting our arts and culture. You rock!

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano
President of GALA

Eight Week Woodcarving Class
Stone Cow Brewery, Barre, MA

Starting Saturday May 5, 2018
1:00 to 4:00 PM

This course is designed as an 8-week introduction to woodcarving. The first project, a carved pretzel, teaches all the basic cuts, working with grain in all directions, the beginnings of 3-dimensional carving, and rounding. At the end of the course students will have completed a 5" in-the-round, snowman.

I will provide all wood blanks and carving knives for students to use during classes. Safety is always stressed, so I insist on all new students wearing protective gloves on the hand that holds the carving, not the knife. I will have some available, but to ensure proper fit students are encouraged to purchase Kevlar gloves. They are available from carving suppliers or fish fillet gloves available at sporting goods stores and department stores will also work. I will also provide protective tape for carving hand (holding the knife) thumbs.

Playing with Light & Color with Mary Iselin
April 2018

In this workshop, we will explore color and light as they add joy and personal voice to our paintings. On day one, we will first watch a short demo, then create a painting of our own using back-lighting.

On day two, we will watch a short landscape demo, then work on a landscape painting of our own, using the techniques demonstrated. In case of heavenly weather, we might even go outside! Registration form

Call for Artists: Lunenburg's First Annual Arts Festival
Lunenburg, MA

The Lunenburg Arts Festival is Saturday, June 9, from 10am - 3pm, and is a celebration of the creative community of Lunenburg, MA and the surrounding area. It is a free event and will take place in the center of town; we'll be shutting down Memorial Drive. The Festival will feature artist vendors, music, craft activities, food for sale from the Lions Club, a Kids Craft Tent with family craft activities, collaborative community art projects, and more. It's a great chance to see art, shop local & handmade product. Above all, it's an opportunity to gather, have fun, and celebrate in our community!

There is parking at the Lunenburg Middle High School, either the upper lot to the west of the building, or the lower student parking. There is also limited parking behind the Brooks House, through the library parking lot. Please leave the library parking lot available for library patrons before 2pm. Memorial Drive is the road that runs next to the library and then alongside the Kid's Kingdom Playground and the Eagle House Senior Center.

If you are an artist and are interested to participate, we are now accepting applications for artisan vendors! It's a juried event, so you apply and then our committee will make a decision to give the festival the best possible balance of artists and products for sale. The application deadline is April 20, you will be notified via email within two weeks after that date as you apply.

For registration go to lunenburgartsfestival.com

Call for Artists: All Around Monadnock Art Exhibition
Historical Society of Cheshire County, Keene, NH

June 1-September 7, 2018

The Monadnock Region means many things to many people. It is recognized for its natural beauty. It is known as the "Currier & Ives Corner" of New Hampshire because of its remarkably intact early New England historical record and built environment. It is known for its quintessential New England festivals and cultural events. And it is known for its people, from old-time New England characters to those who have come to love the region's heritage, culture and landscape. Our region illustrates the story of New England history, culture and natural environment.

What does the Monadnock Region mean to you? The Historical Society of Cheshire County and the region's artists are collaborating on an exhibit that will allow the artists to answer this question. The people, places, heritage, and culture of the Monadnock area will be recognized and celebrated in this collaborative exhibit. Artists are encouraged to create works that illustrate what the region means to them and how it impacts their own lives. The 40 towns of the Monadnock Region are recognized for their natural beauty and cultural heritage. This exhibit is paying homage to those characteristics of "our" region.
