Board President 2016-2017
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Thanks to everyone who attended and sponsored our Annual Spring Gala and Scholarship Awards Night this past Tuesday April 25, 2017.

The event began with networking over wine and hor d'oeuvres, an announcement of the elected slate of the officers and directors for our 2017-2018 board, a shout-out to our gala sponsors, including a special presentation from Edward Jones financial advisors Shane Jacksteit and Linh Thai.

We presented and congratulated our scholarship winners with their awards. We had a wonderful speaker, Erin McConlogue from Dale Carnegie Training San Francisco, end the night with her presentation "Building Rapport and Communications Tactics." What a jam-packed, yet another successful event!

As a former scholarship recipient of AFWA SIlicon Valley myself, it is dear to my heart to witness and to be a part of awarding scholarships every year. On my personal Facebook newsfeed I was reminded of my scholarship award when a picture I took showed up on my timeline - from 2011! That's a picture of my scholarship certificate above!

Next month's meeting will be another eventful meeting, because we will also have our board installation of the elected 2017-2018 directors and officers. Watch for the event invite for more details. See you there!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AFWA SILICON VALLEY 2017 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS!

Matilde Saucedo
Santa Clara University

Matilde is currently attending Santa Clara University with a major in Accounting. Her parents were immigrants from Mexico looking to live the American Dream. She wants to excel academically and work towards a career that will empower her to become a role model for so many Latinas who share a similar background. Her grade point average is 3.946 and is anticipating graduating in May 2019.

Roberto Magana
San Jose State University

Roberto grew up in Watsonville and always had big city dreams. He started his education at San Francisco State, but then went to a Junior College to allow his sister to get an education too without being too much of a burden to his parents. Being the eldest out of all his cousins, he felt responsible to be a role model for them. He currently works for Boman Accounting Group. He anticipates graduating December 2017 and would like to be a member of AFWA.

Thanks to our 2017 Gala Sponsors!

APRIL NEWS
Developing Success Skills
By AFWA National President, Linda Harris, CPA
Posted 4/12/2017

By the time you read this, April 18th will be just days away. The past three and half months, those of us in public accounting have had to exercise our technical skills, the skills and knowledge directly related to our professional industry. Without those technical skills, we could not perform our jobs. However, I could never survive busy season if I didn’t also possess what I like to call success skills.

Q&A: Moving into a Management Role
Posted April 18, 2017

Q: Often when you are looking to advance in your career and the next step up is a supervisory role of some sort, preferred qualifications in job descriptions often include supervisory experience, even for the lowest levels of supervisors. This seems very circular! How do you get supervisory experience if entry-level supervisor roles require or prefer supervisory experience? Many of our WOI are supervisors/managers, how did they step into that first managing role? —-  Sara Page, CPA
