Keeping up with Uncle Moishe
By Al Zuckerman
Uncle
Moishe
and my aunt were in Boca recently visiting their friends Bernie and Ethel, who have spent the winters in Florida for the last twenty years or so. Back in the Bronx during the summer they are always noodging my aunt and
uncle
to come down for a visit in the winter to their condo. So, this February, during this brutal winter in the northeast
Uncle
Moishe
and my aunt took them up on their offer.
They had a great time. One day Unc was playing some penny and two poker in the clubhouse with Bernie and some of his friends. One of the men, Mel Silverstein, was telling a story between hands that took place at the Mordecai Levy Jewish Day School that his great grandson attends on Long Island. Apparently there was a special lunch one day which included treats that parents had brought in for a fundraiser for the school. When the lunch bell rang the kids lined up to get their lunches. Mel said that at the beginning of the line was a basket full of apples. Next to the basket a teacher had placed a card that read, "Take only one, G-d is watching". Further down the line there was a big plate of cookies that was already half gone. There was a small piece of paper laid next to the plate written in a child's sloppy handwriting. As the cards were being dealt for the next hand Mr. Silverstein told the players that the note said, "Take as many as you want, G-d is watching the apples".
