Eco-Summits: April & May

In April or May, you can host an Eco-Summit at your school! This event gives your Green Team the opportunity to showcase all the great activities and green initiatives completed throughout the year with the entire school, family members, neighbors and leaders in the sustainability field. Refer to page 61 of The Academy Guidebook for more details. Let your program manager know if you need help and if the school plans on hosting one so Dream in Green staff can attend!

How To Get Points
The Eco-Summit is an optional activity that gives Green Teams a chance to win  5 bonus points Download the submission form , fill out all the sections and email it to your program manager along with photos or videos by  April 28th .

Dream in Green has already awarded $22,175 in grants to schools this year. April is your last chance to apply for a grant and you can visit our website  to learn more.
 
The  deadline  to submit proposals for the April   Eco-Summit activity  has been extended to Friday, March 31 R emember, the grant is for $575!  Download the guidelines for the proposal.

End-of-year Awards Ceremony

The Dream in Green end-of-year  awards ceremony  will take place  Friday , June 2nd at the Coral Gables Museum - Fewell Gallery: 285 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables, FL 33134.  Bonus: You can attend CGM's Gallery Night after the awards ceremony (free admission, live music and a cash bar until 10 PM).

Nominate the students, facilities staff and principals that helped the Green Team make the program a success.  Download the nomination forms and submit by April 28th to  mabel@dreamingreen.org.

Drop off your household chemicals and hazardous waste, including paints, cleaners, motor oil, propane, pool chemicals, batteries, electronics, and inkjet, toner, and laser printer cartridges for proper disposal. When: April 2nd. Time: 8 AM to 3 PM. Location: 40th Street and Chase Avenue, Miami Beach. Lear about what items are accepted here.


The City Nature Challenge is an event that is organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. From April 14-18 cities all across the United States will compete to log the most observations of biodiversity with iNaturalist. If you'd like more information, visit the website


   
On  April 22nd , join the  Ramos Boys Everglades Challenge at Zoo Miami . To learn more about their efforts to save the Everglades and to register for this event, visit their  website If schools get 100 students to participate they win a personalized Mission Everglades Brick to memorialize their school's conservation efforts.

Edible South Florida harvest calendar  to find out. The vegetables and fruits that are in season this month include: carrots, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, citrus and passionfruit. 



Grants for Special Projects

Through the Wild Ones program, support is provided for projects that use native plants to develop and enhance an appreciation for nature among youth, and that emphasize the involvement of students in all phases of project development. Applications are sought from teachers in grades 3 to 6 for the 2016-17 Donald Samull Classroom Herb Garden Grant. The society will award up to ten $200 grants to public and private school teachers to cultivate an indoor or outdoor herb garden. Selected classrooms will receive three windowsill herb garden kits complete with pots, soil, seeds, and educational materials for use in the classroom. Seedlings for Schools  provides teachers with wildflower plants to establish a native plant garden or enhance an existing one. Public and private pre-K to grade 12 teachers may apply for a grant which includes $50 of native Florida wildflower plants, classroom resources and guidance on garden establishment. Download the grant planning document here.
