April is Autism Awareness Month
Awareness, Acceptance, and Appreciation

Join in celebration for 2018 National Autism Awareness Month! National Autism Awareness Month represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.

Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability, typically appearing during childhood and affecting a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. You can learn more about it  HERE.

The focus for this year and beyond is  ensuring acceptance and inclusion in schools and communities that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people. Let's get one step closer to a society where those with ASDs are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts.

What can I do?
  • Put on the Puzzle! The Autism Awareness Puzzle Piece is the most recognized symbol of the autism community in the world. Autism prevalence is now one in every 68 children in America. Show your support for people with autism by displaying the Autism Awareness Puzzle Piece - as a pin on your shirt, a magnet on your car, a badge on your blog, or even your Facebook profile picture - and educate folks on the potential of people with autism!

Dental Care for Children
in Amador County

The newly opened WellSpace Health in Martell is now  providing
p ediatric dental services two days a week in Amador County. They currently offer dentistry services to patients from birth through age 20.

Dental care should begin at an early age to provide children and adolescents with the best possible opportunity for good oral health that will last a lifetime. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infection that can lead to problems w ith eating, speaking and overall health. Through their program, they are able to refer patients to specialists as needed.

Their dental team is staffed by dedicated professionals specially trained in serving infants, children, and adolescents of all ages. Their goal is to offer high quality dental care in a fun and pleasant child/youth friendly environment in order to create a positive experience for infants, children and teenagers. They customize every patient's treatment.

The services they provide include:
  • Comprehensive new patient exams
  • Recall exams
  • Emergency visits/exams and diagnosis
  • Regular and deep cleanings
  • Full-mouth & individual x-rays
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental sealants
  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Temporary fillings
  • Dental fillings and restorations
  • Crowns for primary and permanent teeth
  • Space maintainers
  • Routine extractions
Their staff is also trained to help anyone that is uninsured or perhaps unaware that they might be eligible for low- to no-cost health care programs. They can help families navigate the enrollment process of many budget friendly health care programs including Medi-Cal, Health Net, Access Dental and Liberty Dental. In addition, they offer a sliding scale fee system depending on income if someone does not qualify for specific programs or services.

If you or someone you know is interested in scheduling an appointment, the number is (209) 268-0560.

How can you give kids the best start in life?

One of the most important factors for early intervention services, is the  early  and accurate identification of infants and young  children who may have developmental delays or disabilities.

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) are screening tools designed
to be completed by parents or primary caregivers, that encourage parent-caregiver involvement. Each questionnaire can be completed in 10-20 minutes, and is divided into five areas: Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving, and Personal-Social. The benefit for all children and families is so that parents/caregivers know which areas they can focus on at home with their children.

For more information, please call First 5 Amador at 257-1092.

Healthy QUICK TIPS of the MONTH

Energy Bites ~ Healthy No-Bake Snacks!

Spring is here and longer days mean more refueling for energetic kids. Try these easy no-bake snacks that will be a huge hit with kids (and adults too!).

Hands-on time: 10 minutes
Start-to-eat time: 30 minutes

Tools:
* measuring cups and spoons
* mixing bowl
* microwave-safe bowl
* baking sheet

Kids kitchen skills:
* measuring
* stirring
* using a microwave

These no-bake snacks taste a lot like chewy granola bars. Pop them in your mouth for a quick pick-me-up.

Ingredients
* 2 cups oats
* 1/3 cup dried cranberries or raisins
* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1/3 cup honey
* 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, optional
* 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or melted butter)
* 1 tablespoon applesauce

Step-by-step
1. In a mixing bowl, stir together the oats, dried cranberries or raisins, cinnamon, and sunflower seeds.
2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, place the honey, coconut oil, and applesauce. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then microwave for 10 seconds more at a time until completely melted.
3. Add the honey mixture to the oat mixture. Stir well for about 5 minutes. Let the mixture cool until it can be easily formed into a ball. If it's too sticky, refrigerate for about 10 minutes or add more oats, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it holds together.
4. Butter your hands, then roll the mixture into 1-inch balls. Place them on a waxed paper lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until they harden, then store in an air tight container in the fridge until you are ready to eat them.
