Explore Antarctica

My wife Barbara and I had a trip of a lifetime when we took a 3 week cruise on Holland America's Zaandam from Valparaiso, Chile, to the Antarctic and up the east coast of Argentina to Buenos Aires.  The first week of the cruise was highlighted by stops in small Chilean fishing villages such as Puerto Montt, Castro and Puerto Chacabuco.  Each of these destinations provided us with a wonderful array of sights from volcanoes to rain forests to waterfalls.  Our trip through Chile was highlighted by our stop in Punta Arenas and cruising the Beagle Channel where Charles Darwin did many of his early explorations. Our final experience in Chile was the passage through what is called Glacier Alley where the ship sailed past five separate glaciers with their deep blue ice.

As beautiful as the trip though Chile was, the passage in the Southern Ocean and into the Antarctic was more that Barbara and I could ever hope to experience.  We passed Cape Horn, traditionally known for fierce winds and high seas.  But on the day we crossed the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans join it was sunny with seas barely reaching six feet.  We then headed south through the Drake Passage to the Antarctic.

A Solo Traveler's Experience on
Norwegian Cruise Line
by - Jennifer Sweeney

As someone who had cruised often, I was accustomed to traveling with friends or family - a built in network of people to dine with, take excursions with, visit the karaoke bar with, etc. As I planned my next vacation, I decided what I needed was some much deserved time alone, time to relax, recharge and do whatever I wanted without the added pressure of going along with what the group wanted to do. This was going to be all about me!

A friend had recently told me about the Studio Cabins on NCL and I was instantly intrigued - if for nothing other than the idea of not having to
pay double occupancy! The cabins were smaller than a standard interior room, the perfect amount of space for someone traveling solo and since the room was only configured for 1 person, the price reflected that as well. As she t old me more about the studio cabins, she also shared they had a Studio Lounge, an area only accessible by your studio cabin key card and was an area for those in the studio cabins to hang out and meet others traveling solo. There was even a big white board where solo travelers wrote out what they'd be doing that day and at what time in case others wanted to meet up with them .

Cruise & Tour
Roundtrip from Tallahassee
Hosted by Brad Baldwin
12 Nights Departing July 4, 2017

Experience the real Alaska up close - this package has it all, the historic interior lands followed  by a Inside Passage cruise.

Beginning with air from Tallahassee to Fairbanks, Alaska where you will you explore the Tanana and Chena Rivers aboard the Riverboat Discovery, see the Alaska Pipeline and enjoy an Alaskan Salmon Bake.

Embark on a land tour to include Denali National Park to experience Alaska's backcountry where  large animals roam and hopefully get a view of Mount McKinley (renamed Denali). Continue by rail to the historic mining town of Talkeetna and by motorcoach to Anchorage.

Travel through the remote southern Kenai Peninsula to the small scenic fishing town of Seward. Here you can explore this town and visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, a non-profit research institution and public aquarium, where you will have close encounters with puffins, octopus, harbor seals, sea lions, and other marine life. Or, take an optional tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield. Wildlife and lush forests thrive around this vast expanse of ice. The native Alutiiq people have relied on these resources to nurture a life entwined with the sea.

Time to leave the land tour and board Holland America Line's Noordam for a 7-night cruise through Glacier Bay and calling on the quaint Alaskan towns of Haines, Juneau (the state capital) and Ketchikan. Then onward via the Inland Passage to Vancouver, British Columbia where you will transfer to the airport for your flight home.

New Zealand is a country of stunning and diverse natural beauty: jagged mountains, rolling pasture land, steep fiords, pristine trout-filled lakes, raging rivers, scenic beaches, and active volcanic zones.

These i slands are one of Earth's most peculiar liar bioregions, inhabited by flightless birds seen nowhere else such as a nocturnal, burrowing parrot called the kakapo and kiwi. Kiwi are not only one of the national symbols - the others being the silver fern leaf and koru - but also the name New Zealanders usually call themselves.

Māori culture continues to play an important part in everyday life and government and corporate symbolism with abundant opportunities for visitors to understand and experience both the history and present day forms of Māori life.

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its fun, laid-back ambiance and inventive "freestyle cruising" concept, which promotes no enforced dress codes, no fixed dining times and comes with a plethora of onboard entertainment and family-friendly activities. Norwegian's 15-ship fleet sails all over the world, with 2017 itineraries lasting anywhere from one to 49 days. Some of the cruise line's destinations include the Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, South America and many more.

During your voyage, adults stay entertained with live performances such as Tony Award-nominated Rock of Ages Musical or sketch comedy from The Second City comedy troupe (available on fo
ur ships), while, youngsters take advantage of the water parks and kids programs. When it comes to dining, Norwegi an's options are notably varied. The cruise line's "freestyle dining" program allows you to chow down in globally inspired eateries like French bistros and Japanese teppanyaki restaurants, and sit down at traditional cruise buffets and formal dining rooms.
