2018 Community Grant Program
On March 5 the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation in partnership with the Community Foundation Sonoma County, launched the 2018 Community Grants program, a broadly accessible, responsive grants program designed to address pressing needs in its communities.

The Vintners Foundation continues its commitment to four program areas:

Health and Human Services : Supporting the most fundamental needs around behavioral health, housing, homelessness, and hunger, funding will target organizations whose mission specifically addresses one of these four areas.

Education : Aligning with Cradle to Career Goal Area 3: "Every young adult is prepared for and completes the highest level of post secondary education or training to achieve their career goals," Community Grants funding for education will focus on programs or projects that provide opportunities for workplace, career and post secondary learning for youth.

2018 Celebrates the 40th Annual Healdsburg Farmers' Market
The 40th annual Healdsburg Farmers’ Market opens for the season at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5. The West Plaza lot will come alive with an abundance of delicious and nutritious bounty, entertainment, education and more.

One of California’s original twenty-two farmers’ markets, the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market opened in July 1978, when the village and surrounding area were strictly agricultural. The market was a major weekly event which the whole town attended, whether you were a producer or a consumer. Almost everyone who sold at the market farmed or produced their goods within miles of it.

In 2018 the Healdsburg Certified Farmers’ Market is as cherished in the community as it was back then. The market is filled with produce, almost all grown in the immediate area. Many of the other food and craft products are also produced locally. In fact, this market is a non-profit, owned and run by the farmers themselves. This is a real farmers’ market.

What’s a certified farmers’ market? This means the people selling you the produce are the growers. They didn’t buy it from a big agricultural producer and bring it to the market. Their farming practices are more environmentally sound and their operations more family-based. Shopping at a certified market is like buying craft from the artist who made it.

Speaking of craft, there are fine artisans at the market as well. Though the market is farm-centric overall, each week there are talented craftspeople selling their work. Excellent food producers are also there. Look for an abundance of meat, seafood, baked goods, spices, pasta, condiments and other edibles. Delicious prepared food and fresh coffee is available, so coming down for breakfast or brunch is a Saturday treat. Also look for many local musicians performing each week: blues, folk, jazz, even Hawaiian music.

We’re planning a 40th anniversary party, including the Sonoma County Fair’s Traveling Circus and other family-friendly doings. There are several other events in the works such as monthly cooking demos, cooking and other activities for kids, the hilarious Zucchini Festival, the Halloween Pumpkin Festival, and the entire month of November is our Holiday Craft Market.

This year the market will have two adjacent aisles specifically for customer parking, making it easier than ever to shop the market and get your purchases to your car.

The Wednesday evening farmers’ market was closed last season due to poor attendance, but we’re working with the city on an alternate location, day and time. More information will be forthcoming in late April.

Journalists in Healdsburg
March 26-29 several nationally known journalists visited Healdsburg , staying at local lodging properties. They visited Jordan Winery for tasting and lunch (shown here), sampled meals at SHED, Spoonbar, Valette, Café Lucia and Costeaux, bicycled with Wine Country Bikes, tasted with Women Winemakers Victoria and Diane Wilson at Wilson Wines, Jen Higgins at Lambert Bridge and Susie Selby at Selby Wines. Breaking into groups they also visited Relish Culinary for a cooking demo and Russian River Rose Company to explore the rose and iris gardens and learn about perfume making. This was the first of two visits scheduled for 2018. The next visit with national journalists is scheduled for November. This is a program of the Healdsburg Tourism Improvement District and is funded by a 2% assessment on overnight stays in Healdsburg lodgings.
