Menunkatuck Audubon: Columbia's Avian Treasures  Wednesday, April 11
7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
bird of colombia
The avian riches of Colombia are legendary. With at least 1870 species, Colombia boasts more species than any country in the world. Colombia holds at least 73 endemics and more than 20 species new to science since the first major field guide was published in 1986. From a birding perspective, the opportunities here are unsurpassed. Until recently however, Colombia has been off limits to birders.

Gina Nichol spent the better part of two months birding in Colombia in 2009, and has been working with the Colombian government and ornithological community to develop tours to this bird-rich country. This program will reveal the avian riches of this once off-limits birding destination and depict what it was like to bird Colombia with vivid photographs of many of the colorful species in this wonderful country. Program is free and open to the public. Refreshments served. For more information, called 203-457-1699 or email program@menunkatuck.org.

Menunkatuck Audubon: Ghost Bird
Sunday, April 22
2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Menunkatuck Audubon
Set in a murky swamp overrun with birders, scientists, and reporters, "Ghost Bird" explores the limits of certainty, the seductive power of hope, and how one phantom woodpecker changed a sleepy Southern town forever.

In 2005, scientists announced that the Ivory-billed woodpecker, a species thought to be extinct for 60 years, had been found in the swamps of Eastern Arkansas. Now six years later, the woodpecker remains as elusive as ever. "Ghost Bird" brings the Ivory-bill's blurry rediscovery into focus revealing our uneasy relationship with nature and the increasing uncertainty of our place within it.

"Ghost Bird" is being screened again because the December showing was suspended due to a flawed DVD. This film is cosponsored by Audubon Connecticut.
