Art Exhibits and Demonstrations
Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations

9am-6pm Daily
200 Artisan Way

Reveal: The Art of David Stratton and Trent Altman
(Through April 30, 2018)

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea announces its third exhibit introducing two new artists in, "Reveal: David Stratton and Trent Altman." Both artists work in large two-dimensional formats.

David Stratton is professor of art and graphic design at Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky. He specializes in large format drawings in pen and ink. Stratton has presented over 30 solo exhibitions of his artwork. He is a 2007 Kentucky Arts Council "Al Smith Fellowship" recipient. The five drawings in this exhibit depict natural wooded scenes.

"My landscape imagery is based upon photos I take while hiking and birdwatching," Stratton states. "These quiet compositions try to focus on the moment, and the textural beauty of both the image and the moment.  My technique using ink lines on paper includes an overlapping cross hatch style and a wandering gestural line to create the final images. Each work typically has 1.5 miles of line length."

Trent Altman is a Louisville, Kentucky painter that specializes in colorful abstracts. Diagnosed with autism, Altman has been painting for 15 years and is a juried Kentucky Arts Council artist with many international awards. One of his paintings was selected as the design for the United Nations stamp in 2012. Two of his large format canvases are included in this exhibit.
Altman states, "I observe and absorb the setting, then take my emotions and convey them as images onto the canvas."

Altman's works convey color and texture through his use of acrylic paint and mixed media on canvas. This combination creates tones and surfaces that transmit motion and feeling in his landscape and abstract compositions.

Show & Tell: Demonstrating 15 Years
(April 7, 2018 - July 21, 2018)
Meet the Artists Reception- Sunday, April 8 1:30-3:00pm

The Kentucky Artisan Center celebrates 15 years in 2018, and this exhibit recognizes the contributions of over 30 artists who have shared their talent through demonstrations. The Center's Artist Demonstration Program brings the creative process to life for visitors each Saturday as artists share their skill, talent and knowledge with visitors. Exhibiting artists in this exhibit have all demonstrated at the Center for eight or more years.

The Kentucky Artisan Center has created this exhibit to acknowledge the generous, educational efforts of these talented artists during this 15th Anniversary year.

Saturday Tours and Demonstrations

April 7  William L. Rogers, of Harrodsburg, will demonstrate his intricate cottonwood bark carvings from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center.

Working almost entirely with cottonwood bark, William L. Rogers found his creative outlet after a 30-year career with IBM. The Montana and Alaskan cottonwood bark that Rogers uses has been harvested from dead trees whose bark has fallen to the ground. All of Rogers' carvings are original, and because no two pieces of bark are alike, no two of his carvings are exactly alike.

April 14Lisa Hagan, of Louisville, will demonstrate how she makes her round beeswax luminaries using dried flowers and wax from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center.

Each luminary is shaped around a balloon with dried flowers embedded in the wax. A lit votive candle makes it glow sending the fragrance of honey and beeswax into the air.

April 21 Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center.

April 28
Darlene Hellard, of McKee, will create a wide variety of cornshuck flowers from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Center.

A native of Jackson County, Hellard creates mums, roses, iris, tulips and more out of cornshucks that she cuts and dyes. Hellard's mother-in-law taught her to make a cornshuck wreath in 1981, and after her aunt learned to make cornshuck flowers from Kentucky Educational Television, she showed Hellard how to make her first flowers.

Hellard is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the Kentucky Arts Council's Kentucky Craft Marketing Program.

Dragonslayer
(March 19, 2018 - May 3, 2018)

" I want to know how we think we can ascertain anything optimistic about the world when we insist on looking through dirty glasses. My creative research focuses on the use of objects, constructed and found, as a way to ask pointed questions related to faith; and the use or abuse of it in everyday life. My work often takes form through installation or built environments; I use a variety of materials and objects to create instances where the viewer is invited to enter into a constructed fiction.

I attempt to make work that invites, allows and provides people with the opportunity to see the world differently. I am interested in contradiction and how we use models and principles that do not stand on their own legs to value and derive meaning. I aim to create work that illuminates the complications behind seeing the world narrowly. I want to highlight the futility, hopelessness, and failure behind the challenge of extracting a pure or unadulterated meaning of the pieces of the puzzle we are given.

Consider what it means to be broken vs. what it means to be altered. Consider everything is fragile and at any moment everything can change. Consider what makes us make decisions could possibly not be our soul or our learned experiences, but the balance or imbalance of certain chemicals in our blood at any given point in time. Consider we take part in destroying a world it is in our best interest to preserve. Consider in order to fix a hole, you have to destroy a pile of dirt.

I employ sculpture as a way to point a finger at our conceived notions of truth and use symbols and objects to invite the viewer to use irreverent skepticism to freely laugh at, poke holes in and make light of those ideas as a last ditch effort to fully understand them. If magic doesn't exist, then that is just fine; but rather than mourning, we should rejoice, because we should prefer a world where that is the case.

I want to be able to constantly reconsider what I often believe to be underlying reasons for how to live a good life and how to make the right decision. What is right and what is wrong is never so simple. I want to know what joy is and how to find a real and lasting version of it. I attempt to introduce an audience to instances that can produce despair in the hope of moving them beyond paralysis in the face of seemingly hopeless situations. I want to be the person to shake people off the fence, not just so I can watch them fall, but so I can catch them before they hit the ground." -Alexander Hanson, Artist Statement.
