Message from Pastor Valeria...
Life and Death.

When I get worked up or stressed about something I tell myself: It's not a matter of life and death. It will work out. If I don't get to it today there's still tomorrow.
But this time of year we are reminded of a real matter of life and death: Easter! Without death, there would be no new life. Without the crucifixion there would be no resurrection. And without a long winter we would not appreciate the first signs of spring.
It feels like nature is coming alive again. The birds have started singing. I have not yet seen any blossoms but I'm sure they will be out soon.
Do you ever wonder why the cross became the symbol of Christianity? A common execution tool? Why not the empty tomb, or the bread and cup? Why this instrument of murder? When Jesus wasn't even the only one who was executed that way. For a while among the first Christians the fish was their secret symbol. When they were persecuted it was how they would identify themselves to each other.
The Greek word for fish is IXTHUS, an acronym for "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior."
Why that didn't stick, I don't know. Instead, we now have the cross to identify ourselves with.
It reminds us of Jesus' suffering, and the suffering of many others. It reminds us that we are not alone in our own suffering. That life can be brutal and people can be incredibly cruel. And it reminds us that God does not desert us in those moments. Suffering is not proof of the absence of God. It is proof of the very presence of God! God used Jesus' suffering to give us new life and new hope. God used death to give us life.
This doesn't take away the sting of death and the pain of losing someone. Or the helplessness we feel when we see others suffer. All of that is part of life and part of being human. But it does take away the sense that death is the end. And that suffering is meaningless. And that we are alone.

This is a matter of life and death: God gives you a new life! No matter who or what may have to die in your life, what parts of you may die - in the end, there is life. In the end, there is God.

Alleluia ! He is risen.

Wishing you a blessed Easter and happy Spring!

Pastor Valeria

WORDS TO PONDER
Earth Day
Earth Day
April 22nd - Let's make every day an Earth Day!
It's good to recycle. What's even better? Reduce the amount of waste you produce, especially plastic and styrofoam. Bring your own cup when you get coffee. Bring own containers if you know there will be leftovers. Yes, it takes a bit more planning ahead and extra work with washing the dishes but you can easily making it a habit by keeping a clean cup and container in your car.

Recycling requires a lot of energy and creates fossil fuels. So reuse and reduce instead.
Our lives depend on it!
Discussion Series
Discussion Series about Mental Illness and the Church
Six weeks ongoing - Starts Sunday, April 29th after worship
We invite you to read and discuss "Blessed Are the Crazy. Breaking the silence about mental illness, family & church" by Sarah Griffith Lund.

Sarah Griffith Lund takes the lid off mental illness in this raw, honest look at her father's battle with bipolar disorder, the helpless sense of a deja vu as her brother struggles with his own mental illness, and serving as a spiritual advisor for her cousin, a mentally ill man executed for murder. Through the challenges and despair, she shows how churches can be safe havens for people who have brain diseases and for their loved ones.
While this sounds dramatic and extreme, we have all encountered mental illness in our lives in one way or another. This six week study will touch on those issues but also on much more: Our image of God, and our own stories and how we testify to them. As we read, pray about and discuss a chapter each week and a corresponding Bible passage, we will build a strong spiritual community and a deeper connection to each other, and will foster compassion for those affected by mental illnesses.

Meeting times Sundays after worship, starting April 29. Register through the church office by contacting Emily via email [email protected] or phone (508) 393-8156.

Please order your own copy of the book, available on paperback and Kindle. AMAZON LINK

Spring Music Series: Jeff Snow: The Softer Side of Celtic
Saturday, April 7th 2pm - 3:30pm MORE INFO
Growing up as the son of a drummer in a Bagpipe band and in a home where older Celtic songs were the everyday sounds, Jeff Snow developed a love for the music of Scotland, England and Ireland. His concerts  have been described as “quiet and relaxing " and much of it is, but sometimes he'll break out and the foot stomping begins. Jeff is a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays the music and tells the stories behind the songs. He plays six and twelve string guitar, autoharp, Celtic Bouzouki & Bodhran. Jeff also plays the drums and a variety of other percussion instruments. A skilled guitar player, Jeff was featured in the August 2006 issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Please join us for the second concert in our Music Series and help us celebrate Celtic music and the coming of Spring!
