THE BOBBY SHEW QUARTET FEATURING JOHN PROULX PLAYS CHET BAKER
Friday, April 18 - 7:00 p.m.

$20 Alliance Members*
$25 General Admission

Jazz figured prominently in the work of Ken Price, whose drawings are featured in  Ken Price: Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Works on Paper 1962-2010, on view at the Harwood through May 4.  In fact, Price was a student of jazz great Chet Baker.  The Harwood celebrates that connection with a  concert inspired by the musical artistry of Chet Baker.

Chet Baker became a huge star shortly after entering the jazz scene in the early 1950s.  The warmth of his sound and the beautiful, simplistic lyricism in his trumpet soloing caught everyone's ears, as did his untrained, almost effeminate soft and higher-pitched singing style. World-renowned trumpet player Bobby Shew chose L.A.-based vocalist/pianist John Proulx to provide the vocal content in bringing the Baker sound to life for Shew's return performance at the Harwood. Continuing his lifelong achievements as a performer with recent recognition on the scale of the "Bobby Shew Night" with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in Prague, it is fortunate that Shew enjoys sharing his great talent in his native New Mexico. Proulx, whose CD Baker's Dozen demonstrates the similarity of his style and vocal tone with Chet's, is the perfect combination with Shew's warm tone. Together with Seattle bassist Michael Glynn and Santa Fe drummer Cal Haines, the quartet will deliver arrangements by Shew and Proulx of favorites from the Baker repertoire.

Members of the Harwood Jazz Society will enjoy early concert admission for best seat selection and a post-concert reception with the performers.  To learn more about the Harwood Jazz Society, contact us at [email protected].

HELP US BRING THE SANTOS HOME!

The Gustavo Victor Goler Collection

As you may know,  the Harwood Museum of Art has the unique opportunity to acquire a remarkable collection of forty-six works of art by contemporary Santero Gustavo Victor Goler.

Thanks to nearly 60 generous supporters, we have raised 85% of the $70,000 needed to acquire this stunning collection.   We only need to raise an additional $11,000 to add these works of art to the Harwood's permanent collection, so that we may steward it and share it with the public for generations to come.  Please contact our Director of Development at [email protected] to learn how you can help us close this campaign!

ALLIANCE MEMBER FORUMS

Thank you to the twenty Alliance Members who joined our forums in March!  Both sessions proved to be open, candid conversations about the Alliance Membership experience - just as we'd hoped.  A few themes emerged from the forums, including:
  • Members greatly value the active role that the Harwood plays in the Taos community.  One member referred fondly to the Harwood's "aggressive neighborliness."
  • Members enjoy the dynamic, diverse array of public programs offered by the Harwood.  Several members mention how much they enjoy films, while others stressed the importance of panel discussions and other similar forums.  One member asked that daytime programs take place at 1 p.m. rather than 2 p.m. - so we're trying that this month!
  • Members also enjoy the Harwood's lively exhibitions, and the relevance of those exhibitions to the Taos community.
  • Members enjoy the monthly enewsletter, and feel informed about what's happening at the Harwood.
  • Several members expressed confusion about how the Alliance organization relates to the Harwood's Governing Board, its Advisory Council, the University of New Mexico and the University of New Mexico Foundation.  This discussion referenced the current status of the Alliance Board, and its members.
  • Alliance members want the Harwood to be accessible to every member of the community.
These forums were so rewarding that we plan to do them on a regular basis in the future.  Stay tuned for details, and dates!

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

As the winds of April swirl around the Harwood Museum of Art's building, the creative energies are swirling inside!  Visitors are loving our spring exhibitions, the galleries are filled every day with the sounds of joyful children, and the Arthur Bell Auditorium continues to serve as an important gathering space for our community.

We carry that energy into April, beginning with a special Community Day this Saturday, April 5 entitled A Day of Wonder and Art. This free, family-friendly, fun event will explore the wonder of learning - taking inspiration from Ken Price's colorful drawings.  Inspiration of another type will fill the Arthur Bell Auditorium on April 18, when the Bobby Shew Quartet featuring John Proulx will perform favorites from the Chet Baker repertoire.  And, really, who doesn't love Elaine Stritch?  I want to be exactly like her when I grow up, and so I'm very much looking forward to our April 11 screening of Elaine Stritch:  Shoot Me.

Last but absolutely not least, April is National Volunteer Month.  Did you know that the estimated value of a volunteer hour in New Mexico is $17.62?  That reflects the knowledge, expertise and experience that volunteers bring to organizations like the Harwood Museum of Art.  As far as I'm concerned, however, volunteers are invaluable.  And so I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of the Harwood's volunteers for making the Harwood the dynamic, community-engaged museum that it is.

Warm Regards,

FILM:  ELAINE STRITCH:  SHOOT ME
Friday, April 11 - 7:00 pm
Now in her late 80s, Broadway legend Elaine Stritch remains as ferociously funny as ever. In this bold, hilarious and poignant portrait, the uncompromising Tony and Emmy Award-winner is revealed both on and off stage. Candid reflections about her life are punctuated with words from friends (including James Gandolfini, Tina Fey, John Turturro, Hal Prince, George C. Wolfe, Nathan Lane and Cherry Jones) and archival footage showcasing some of the great moments from her career. Whether dominating the stage, tormenting Alec Baldwin on the set of 30 Rock, or sharing her struggles with aging, diabetes and alcoholism, Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me reaches beyond the icon's brassy exterior and reveals an inspiring portrait of a complex woman and artist.

FILM:  TIM'S VERMEER
Friday, April 25 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 26 - 1:00 p.m.
Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all of art history: How did 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer (Girl with a Pearl Earring) manage to paint so photo-realistically 150 years before the invention of photography?  The epic research project on which Jenison embarks in order to test his theory is as extraordinary as his eventual discovery. Spanning eight years,Jenison's adventure takes him to Delft, Holland, where Vermeer painted his masterpieces; on a pilgrimage to the North coast of Yorkshire to meet artist David Hockney; and even to Buckingham Palace in order to see a Vermeer masterpiece in the collection of the Queen.
