Community Luncheon Registration Closes Soon!

FEW SEATS REMAIN for our May 3 Community Luncheon. Register now - we'll sell out in the next few days!

Learn more about the topic of Unconscious Bias from keynote speaker Howard Ross and join us as we recognize local community builders who will receive the 2017 Winston-Salem Foundation Award and the 2017 ECHO Awards. We're thankful for the community's interest in this annual event, and we look forward to a sold-out crowd!

Following the luncheon, we will award $150 grants to three individuals to support their favorite local nonprofits. To be entered into each drawing, just like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and/or attend the Community Luncheon!

Pauline Carter's Story: a $2.85 Million Charitable Legacy
Pauline Carter, who started working at Reynolds Tobacco in 1926 making $0.10 an hour in the cafeteria, ultimately left a $2.85 million charitable legacy through the Foundation. Gene Hoots tells her remarkable story - and what 2017's buyout could mean for current Reynolds American shareholders - in a Winston-Salem Journal guest column published earlier this week.

This FOX8 video highlights the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, one of the many local organizations that benefits from Pauline's vision and generosity.

March Community Grants: $515,350 to Local Nonprofits
19 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS recently received over $515,000 in Community Grants in March. This vital support, made six times a year, is made possible by donors to unrestricted and field of interest funds and to our flexible grantmaking and Community Leadership funds. We are indebted to these donors for their visionary support of our community!
Congratulations to our March 2017 Community Grant recipients!

Giving Matters:
Do You Dread Tax Time?
PEOPLE OFTEN ask us, "What are the benefits of having a fund at the Foundation instead of giving directly to my favorite nonprofits?" Here's a concrete example that might help to clarify...

Janet Greene believed in giving back to her community, but she was sometimes overwhelmed about which nonprofits to support within her budget. Sometimes she'd realize at year-end that she hadn't given enough, or she'd given too much, or she had inadvertently duplicated a gift. And then there were the many charitable tax receipts to track and document - Janet really dreaded the advent of every April!

Then she found the answer to her problem: a donor-advised fund at the Foundation. Janet now feels that she's a more informed, strategic, and effective giver - and she enjoys giving more than ever! If you'd like more information on the Foundation's fund offerings, please contact Susan Elster
