Make Lupus Matter - Awareness Event, May 8

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans, including 36,000 Hoosiers, have some form of lupus -- a disease that is more prevalent than sickle-cell anemia, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis combined. However, few people really understand the devastating and sometimes deadly impact of this disease. That is why the Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter (LFA Indiana) will host "Make Lupus Matter Awareness Celebration" on Friday, May 8 between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the Whistler Plaza (outdoor) at the Indianapolis City Market, at the corner of Market Street and Delaware Street.

The event will feature music, a mini-auto-immune health fair with 9 participating organizations including and a Lupus Wheel of Fortune Game and Lupus Cornhole activity. Inside the City Market, vendors will graciously donate a part of their lunch-time proceeds to the Lupus Foundation.

On hand to support the efforts of LFA Indiana and address attendees will be Morgan E McGill, CEO, LFA, Indiana Chapter; Laura Chavez, Director, Office of Women's Health, State of Indiana;  Connie Lawson, Indiana Secretary of State; Judy Schaff, lupus patient and more...

Update: Support Groups

We are happy to offer 14 support groups throughout the state. Lupus support groups provide an opportunity to spend time with others impacted by the disease. Sharing experiences, methods of coping and insights into living with lupus helps members develop coping strategies to reduce the stress that often accompanies living with a chronic illness.  We hope you'll attend a support group meeting soon. Click here to see all Indiana locations and details about each group.

Answer: All exercise plans should be discussed with your physician or exercise specialist in order to maximize results and minimize possible harm. Activities such as walking, swimming, bicycling, low-impact aerobics, certain types of yoga, Pilates, stretching, or using an elliptical exercise machine will strengthen your bones and tone your muscles without aggravating inflamed joints, while also helping to lower the risk for developing osteoporosis.   Learn More
