April 2015

In 2014, The White House launched the 'It's On Us' initiative to raise awareness about sexual assault on college campuses. ' It's On Us' asks everyone -- men and women across America -- to make a personal commitment to step off the sidelines and be part of the solution to campus sexual assault.

  • It is estimated that between 20% and 25% of women in college will be a victim of rape or       attempted rape over their college career.
  • Among college women, 9 in 10 victims of rape and sexual assault knew their offender.
  • Almost 12.8% of completed rapes, 35% of attempted rapes, and 22.9% of threatened rapes happened during a date.
  • It is estimated that for every 1,000 women attending a college or university, there are 35         incidents of rape each academic year.
  • Of victims of completed rape 33.7% were victimized on campus and 66.3% off campus.
  • Less than 5% of completed or attempted rapes against college women were reported to law   enforcement.  However, in 2/3rds of the incidents the victim did tell another person, usually a   friend, not family or school officials.

#survivorloveletter
Write a declaration of self love or honor a survivor in your life.

"You are not what they took from you." So begins a love letter written by a sexual assault survivor to herself. The Tumblr #SurvivorLoveLetter offers a platform for people to write love letters to survivors of sexual assault to remind them they are beautiful, strong, and - most of all - loved.

The founder of the Tumblr page, Tani Ikeda, is a survivor of sexual assault. Every Valentine's Day (the anniversary of the attack) is difficult for Ikeda. "I would imagine what it would mean for my younger self to wake up on Valentine's Day and read message after message of public support for survivors. That's when I knew I wanted to create #SurvivorLoveLetter."

The letters are submitted to Ikeda's personal email address, and are either typed or photographed from a handwritten letter. They contain powerful messages of encouragement from friends and relatives of survivors, but some of the most impactful letters are written by survivors themselves.

"That type of support and acknowledgement from loved ones of survivors felt really important to me," says Ikeda. "Part of breaking the stigma of shame surrounding being a rape survivor is for others to acknowledge that it happened, and honor what that journey looks like."
