Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. May is National Teacher Appreciation month, so let your favorite teachers know how much you appreciate them. Teachers provide the necessary skills for our children to have a productive future and I would like to thank all the teachers for their hard-work, dedication and commitment to our children!

Mother's Day is right around the corner and I want to wish all mothers, especially my beautiful mother a Happy Mother's Day.  Mothers are the best and always have a special way of making everything better. So be sure to show your appreciation and love to your mother on May 8.  Happy Mother's Day!

Commissioner pushes for clean energy for homes 
Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution to implement the County's new Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program, which he also sponsored . The resolution passed on April 19 and calls for the Mayor or his administration to develop agreements with PACE providers for Commission approval.  

More protection for car rental customers  
Commissioner Diaz sponsored an ordinance requiring rental car companies to provide customers notice of any administrative fees and surcharges associated with toll charges or toll violations while using the rental car. The ordinance also requires car rental facilities to post signs notifying customers if they will be held responsible for payment or reimbursement of toll charges or violations incurred during their use of the vehicle. The ordinance passed on April 5 at the Board of County Commission meeting. 
 
Commissioner Diaz kicks off Autism Awareness Month

On April 5, 8 year old piano prodigy Jacob Velazquez helped Commissioner Diaz kick off Autism Awareness month with a live performance at the Stephen P. Clark Center in downtown Miami. This year's theme "Express Yourself" had Jacob performing two pieces by Claude Debussy and Yanni. Jacob was also joined by the talented 15 year old Bryan Fernandez-Cornejo of the City of Sweetwater, who unveiled a beautiful painting he created specifically for this event. In 2009, Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution declaring April as Autism Awareness Month in Miami-Dade County. 
Honoring World War II and Vietnam War Veterans at MIA
On April 2, Commissioner Diaz joined Honor Flight South Florida, Miami International Airport officials, Eastern Air Lines, and nearly 2000 South Floridians to welcome World War II and Vietnam War Veterans at the second annual Honor Flight at Miami International Airport. The 154 veterans traveled to Washington D.C., where they received tours of the World War II and Korean War memorials. On the return flight, these veterans also received nearly 3,000 personalized thank you letters from airlines, federal agencies, airport tenants, school children, civic organizations and politicians.
Commissioner leads trade mission to China and Taiwan

Commissioner Diaz, who serves as the Chairman of the International Trade Consortium (ITC) led a Business Development Mission to China and Taiwan from April 11-23, 2016.The trip started in Shanghai, moved onto Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Taipei. Commissioner Diaz met with several government officials as well as representatives from China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines about creating direct flights to Miami International Airport. The 33 delegation included government representatives, economic development agencies and 24 business delegates. Delegates had an opportunity to network with Chinese businesses and participate in one-to-one business matchmaking meetings. The purpose of the mission was to foster bilateral trade commerce, tourism and cultural exchange between Miami-Dade County and China and Taiwan. In 2014, China was South Florida's third-ranked trade partner with a total bilateral trade of $6.59 billion. Taiwan was South Florida's 37th-ranked trade partner with a bilateral trade of $560 million. Miami-Dade County and New Taipei City have been engaged in a Sister Cities relationship since 1989. 
Congrats to District 12 students Valeria Sophia Hernandez and Amanda Perez

Congrats to District 12 students Valeria Sophia Hernandez from Doral Academy and Amanda Perez from Renaissance Middle Charter for winning the Neat Street's Miami "Clean Up and Green Up Poster" contest. The contest encouraged students to design a poster focused on cleaning up our community. Both Hernandez and Perez will be honored along with seven other students at the May 3 Board of County Commission meeting.
Congrats to District 12 student Genessis M. Toro

Congratulations to District 12 student Genessis M. Toro from Ben Sheppard Elementary School for winning the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department's "Every Drop Counts" Poster Contest. The poster contest had more than 1,671 entries from students and is part of an outreach plan to educate school children on the importances of water conservation. Genessis will be recognized at the May 17 Board of County Commission meeting, along with 12 other winners.
Free Food Program for children this Summer

The Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department will offering free hot and cold meals to children 18 years and younger from June 13 to Auguts 19, 2016. The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provides a free, nutritionally balanced meals to children during the summer vacation when school breakfast and lunches are not available to them.

 On March 29 at the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board meeting, Commissioner Diaz was honored to be presented  as a "Plank Owner" of the Miami Military Musuem.

On April 10, Commissioner Diaz took part in the Autism Speaks Walk at Doral Central Park. The commissioner presented a proclamation to Autism Speaks and more than 26,000 people attended.

Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. "Drain and Cover" Campaign for Mosquito Season

 

Mosquito Season and the rainy season is quickly approaching and Miami-Dade County wants to offer you some steps to keep your family safe from mosquito breeding and mosquito bites. The   "Drain and Cover"   campaign offers residents steps to properly prevent mosquito breeding. If residents have questions regarding mosquito breeding, please call 311.

SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
