The Enneagram is a comprehensive model of human psychology that describes nine distinct, yet interrelated, personality types. Understanding the different perspectives of the types can illuminate the blind spots that interfere with our natural ability to connect, enjoy, and support each other. In my classes and consultations I offer knowledge and support to people who want to know the truth of who they really are. I hope to see you soon!

Are You Afraid of Learning About Your Personality Type?

Sometimes when I talk about the Enneagram to someone who has never heard of it, they get that deer-in-the-headlights look in their eyes. Depending how safe and curious they feel in that moment, they might dare to whisper, "What if I don't like what I find out?"

Fear of unknown creepy-crawlies under the rock of our habitual self-image stops a lot of people from exploring the very thing that holds the potential to lead them to
everything they have ever longed for in this life.

I have yet to meet a person who does not harbor a secret fear that something about them is not okay. With some people this fear is close to the surface-- they go through life feeling like a dog that has been beaten, bowing and scraping to avoid more punishment. With others the fear is deeply buried under what looks like rock-solid self-confidence, but betrays itself (often in the disguise of anger) the moment their world- or self-view is challenged.

Despite of this (actually because of this), exploring the Enneagram Personality Types with a group is one of the most healing things we will ever do. Together, we take a deep breath, turn over those rocks, and look directly-- and  compassionately-- at what is really under there. Oh, sweet amazement: we're not that different! Everybody has a rock, and everybody has some stuff they don't want to deal with and don't want anyone to see.

Keeping that stuff under the rock uses up a TON of psychic energy. It's exhausting-- mentally, emotionally, and even physically. I fell in love with the Enneagram because I finally, finally, finally understood that I am not alone. I am not more flawed than anyone else. I'm just a person. I don't have to be perfect. I don't have to have it all figured out. WHEW!

The relief is priceless and if that's all we got out of learning the Enneagram it would be well worth it. But there's MORE (and it's not a set of steak knives). Each personality type has a secret, mostly unconscious "Basic Fear" that is directly related to the most precious gifts of their true nature, their deepest Self, Soul, Spirit-- call it what you like or don't call it anything-- but if you are willing to follow the thread of the unsavory and uncomfortable parts of your personality, that thread will lead you home.

If you want to know right now what home looks like, ask the people who love you best. They already see the Essence of you, and their dearest wish is that you could see it too. It takes even more courage to look at this-- our magnificence-- than it does to look under the rock. The Enneagram of Essence attempts to describe in words what love already knows:

Strength and Aliveness (Type Eight)
Unity and Being (Type Nine)
Sacredness and Impeccability (Type One)
Unconditional Love and Sweetness (Type Two)
 Glory and Radiance (Type Three)
Beauty and Depth (Type Four)
Clarity and Illumination (Type Five)
 Awakeness and Solidity (Type Six)
 Joy and Freedom (Type Seven)

Luckily we don't have to look at them all at once and risk exploding with bliss. (Whew again!) Every human being has (is) all of these qualities and more, but having a Type means we get to specialize in one facet of the diamond. Our Enneagram Type points us to the particular Essential qualities that we love enough to up-end all our rocks and hidey-holes so we can shine this particular light into the world in our totally individual way. When we do this fully, we invite others to see their own Essence, reflected in the mirror of our embodied consciousness.

In this way, rock by rock, person by person,
we all come to know our wholeness.

New group beginning Tuesday,
October 1st, from 7-9 pm!

 Enneagram Foundations Course

A nine-class series exploring each type in depth.

Beginners and experienced students are equally welcome!

Because we have all nine types in us, it is possible to literally step into the energy of each type and feel what it's like to move through the world from that perspective. This experience opens up great reserves of compassion-- for others and for ourselves--
and helps to free us from the limited perspective of our dominant type.

This course is about much more than just learning the personality types. You will gradually be increasing your powers of observation, awareness, and Presence. Enneagram Work can be deeply transformative, and real transformation takes time. I have spaced this course out over several months so you can integrate your new insights into your daily life.

Some aspects we will cover for each type include:

The Essence Qualities (our greatest gifts and our true nature)

The Healthy, Average, and Unhealthy Expressions

The Basic Fear and Basic Desire

The Childhood Pattern

The Structural Pattern of the Psyche

The Superego Message

The Healing Attitude

The Path of Transformation

The Directions of Psychological and Spiritual Growth

This class is highly interactive with lots of time for questions and exploring the aspects that most intrigue the group. If you have already attended this course you are welcome to come again-- it will be different!

I first experienced this activity on a spiritual retreat, and loved the way it invited us gently and beautifully into a deeper truth. This is not a vision board, although sometimes a future direction becomes more clear. Primarily it is a way of giving loving attention to the part of us that so often gets neglected in the rush of everyday life.

How it works:
We start with a guided centering practice and then drop into a companionable silence. In the center of the table is a pile of magazines, scissors and glue, and we cut out images that have emotional resonance and then arrange them as we please. This is a mode of artistic expression that helps us get in touch with whatever themes are present at this point on our path. It is not about making something beautiful, although I have never seen an ugly collage result from this process. Our soul's truth is always beautiful.

Many people find it hard to meditate, to quiet the mind enough to contact our deeper knowing. Making a collage gives us something to do while in a meditative state. At times throughout the process I will ring a chime, reminding us to sense our bodies, allow our feelings, notice our patterns of thought-- inviting us to drop in to ourselves more deeply.

When the collages are finished we share them with the group, explaining (if we wish) the meanings of the images we selected, what we learned, how we are feeling. Being witnessed in this way is a powerful experience that reinforces the value of connecting with our deeper selves.

Every time I do Meditative Collage I leave with a satisfying sense of fullness. I feel more awake, more connected to myself, my life, and other people. I hope you will come and try it for yourself!

Testimonial
:

"I loved Meditative Collage.  I think what I liked most was that it wasn't about the end result.  I thought it would be, but it wasn't.  It was about creating an environment and cultivating a field where I was in the moment and whatever happened was just fine.  Thank you for inviting that kind of absorption into the present moment - to the expression of embodiment."

Discover Your True Nature:
A Women's Retreat in Woodstock, VT

with Penny Dickson of Women's Wilderness Retreats
 Tracy Harrison of Purpose, LLC
and Jenny Campbell of Enneawake

woodstock
October 25-27, 2013
$325 all-inclusive

In a truly amazing bit of synchronicity, I have connected with Penny Dickson, an experienced outdoorswoman and wilderness retreat guide, at the precise moment when I just can't get enough of being outside in nature: walking in the woods, sitting on the deck, lying on the front lawn in the grass, staring at the sky (let the neighbors think what they want!).

It is so easy, in the modern age, to forget that as humans we are part of nature, not separate from it. At this Retreat I will be presenting two short Enneagram talks that will invite us to use the natural world as a mirror, reflecting the Essential Qualities of our True Nature back to us.

The weekend will include hiking on classic Vermont trails, fireside conversations, and luxury accommodations. (This is not camping-- maybe next time!) To deepen this weekend immersion in self-nurturance, health-and-wellness counselor Tracy Harrison www.eatonpurpose.com will be preparing sumptuous, nutritious meals and sharing with us the latest information about optimizing our health and vitality through nutrition.

This Retreat is SOLD OUT. Contact me if you would like to be on the waiting list, and/or if you would like to be informed when we schedule the next one!

Authentically yours,
