Are You Grateful for Your Job?

Luke 17:11-18 (KJV): "And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger."

COMMENTARY: Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, I thought this would be an appropriate moment to ask about your "attitude of gratitude." In this mind-blowing passage, Jesus supernaturally heals ten men afflicted with leprosy. Yet, just one turned back and thanked Him. Jesus was astounded by the lack of gratitude on the part of the other nine.

APPLICATION: Are you grateful for your job today? In my observation and experience, few people in our economy truly grasp and appreciate what it takes for someone to create and perpetuate a job. In reality, it takes a great deal of courage, faith, commitment, sales activity, revenues, cash flow, profit, administrative effort, bureaucratic red tape, taxes, insurance and overhead.

Add benefits (not "rights") such as paid holidays, paid sick days, paid vacation days, employer contributions to health care premiums and retirement programs (whether private of public, such as Social Security), and you're talking a LOT of money.

Do you want to bless your employer next week when you return from the long holiday weekend? Go into his or her office and thank him or her for your job. Not in a gushy, manipulative way to earn points, but in a meek, sincere, simple way...AND MEAN IT!  He or she will probably be dumbfounded. 1 out of 10 (10%) lepers who were healed thanked Jesus. Truth be known, the percentage of employees who thank their employers for their jobs is probably much smaller.

The moral of the story is this: don't take your job for granted! If you are so discontent and miserable that you cannot appreciate the job you have, then stop whining and have the guts to either get another job or go out and create your own job!

Joyfully yours,
