Issue 1: Get to Know the Choosing Wisely Approach
November 15, 2016

The HFHT is ramping up its campaign to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments so that we can make smart and effective choices ("Choose Wisely") to ensure high quality care.

Our aim is to educate all those who are involved in any way in providing patient care, both in our FHT and in the community, about the Choosing Wisely approach so that our team can "Practise Wisely". We aim to provide opportunities to learn more about what treatments and tests may not be necessary and ways to help patients understand this approach and be a part of the decision making process.

Choosing Wisely Canada has a very comprehensive website for clinicians and patients (see links at right), as well as references for all the tests and interventions they are recommending.

As clinicians, we know better than anyone the economic and time restraints that come with Family Practice. Choosing Wisely Canada has put their information together in a way that makes sharing it with patients easy to fit into the typical office workflow.

Drs. Robert Kerr, Michael Pray, and Monica De Benedetti (pictured from top to bottom at right) will be putting out weekly tips and sharing best practices in order to help our team Practise Wisely. They also want to hear about both the success stories and barriers that you are faced with.

In the future, we plan to undertake a project that will focus on a particular test or treatment across the HFHT, among other ideas. Stay tuned!
