30th Annual Go West Summit
Discover Salt Lake City's History
The Salt Lake culture has a deep history with our Native American ancestors, Mormon Pioneers, miners and trappers. The Natural History Museum of Utah and This is the Place Heritage Park are two of Salt Lake City’s education centers to learn about Utah tribes such as the Goshute, Navajo, Paiute, Shoshone and Ute. While the Natural History Museum has exhibits dating back to pre-historic times, their research continues everyday as an active research facility with frequent dinosaur discoveries only found in Utah. About one mile away, This is the Place Heritage Park brings history to life where you can see Native American performances, learn how blacksmiths worked 100 years ago, try traditional Pioneer delicacies and take a train ride down Historic Main Street.

One of the newest additions to Salt Lake is the Discovery Center at Temple Square. This hands-on experience brings your own ancestors to life with interactive displays, friendly staff to help you search for relatives and build your own family tree.

We will see in Salt Lake next January where you can learn about our history or search for your own.

Utah: Where 5 National Parks are Only the Beginning
The open road is calling you to the Road to Mighty® , a road trip that compels you to pair Utah’s Mighty 5 ® national parks with 43 state parks, seven national monuments, five national forests and undesignated beauty — all along 2,200 miles of scenic byways.

Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion national parks are often the starting lineup for a Utah vacation. But beyond these, a wealth of outdoor recreation and cultural experiences await. Pair hiking down the 1,000-foot face of the towering Island in the Sky with a respectful walk among 1,000-year-old-ruins. Take it slow on the All American Road: National Scenic Byway 12, and take it even slower by spending a night or two in serenely remote Boulder, an unexpected haven for Zagat-rated cuisine.

Ask a local for the story behind Hell’s Backbone Grill before continuing to Central Utah, where Capitol Reef’s fractured red rock landscape rises up alongside Boulder Mountain, Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument and the San Rafael Swell. The entire state boasts a mix of right-off-the-road surprises, serene vistas, pristine dark skies and authentic communities. Take a roadtrip where stops are encouraged and demanded. Stop and stay awhile in Utah.
The Time is Now to Visit California's Wine Country
As the threat from wildfires subsides, California’s Wine Country communities now face the daunting task of healing. Visiting #CaliforniaWineCountryNow will help the entire region. Consider sending clients this fall, when the weather is beautiful, vines show autumn colors and there’s plenty to see, taste and experience.

The region has more than 1,200 wineries, and fewer than 10 were heavily damaged. Most tasting rooms have reopened. And 90 percent of this year’s grapes were harvested before the fires struck.

Crowds are smaller, too, which can be a real game-changer for some of the most popular places in Napa and Sonoma. For example, clients can walk right in with no waiting to many popular tasting rooms, breweries and restaurants. Many popular Napa Valley restaurants that often require booking far in advance have tables available now, including Terra, Redd, Bouchon, and Ad Hoc. And the majority of wineries in this region are open and would love to welcome clients to their properties, including Robert Mondavi Winery, Rodney Strong Vineyards, St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery, and Domaine Carneros.

Visit California is doing everything we can to tell the world it’s time to visit.

Appointments Begin December 1st!
What You Need to Know

We know this is a complicated process which is why we're covering the appointment process TWICE in this newsletter (see " Are You Prepared " above). Here's a quick re-cap of the appointment timeline:
  1. You will have three weeks to log in and select the companies you'd like to meet with. We suggest logging in early, and again at the end of the process to request meetings with companies that register late. The website makes it easy to see who has registered since you last logged in. The appointment request process closes on December 22nd.
  2. On December 29th (after the GWS staff matches your requests) you may log in to view your appointment schedules. They will not be sent to you. Suppliers can expect to receive anywhere from 15-25 appointments. Buyers will receive a nearly full appointment schedule.
  3. You then have three weeks to research and modify your appointment schedules. Use this time to contact companies directly using the tools we provide online to request additional appointments or remove appointments that may not be beneficial.

Experience the Northern Lights in Anchorage
With the northern lights overhead and the snow sparkling, Anchorage, Alaska is a winter wonderland. Aurora season is already in full swing, with dazzling displays from late September to April.

Anchorage's starry nights are nature’s perfect backdrop for aurora viewing. Vibrant blues, pinks, greens and yellows sway in the sky, marking the path of the dancing aurora. The shimmering opus can be seen swirling in Anchorage’s starlit skies as early as 8 p.m. They can be incredibly bright, multihued and fast moving.

The best displays tend to be accompanied by cloudless and moonless skies. The best hours are often near midnight. Aurora chasers should plan a few days at least because the aurora is, like the weather, variable.

Spots near the city with wide open views and low levels of man-made light are best. Kincaid Park, Glen Alps and Point Woronzof are each at the edges of the city, and good options. Eklutna Tailrace, Knik, Girdwood or the Eagle River Nature Center are well worth the trip. If you need a little help chasing auroras, companies like Alaska Photo Treks, Salmon Berry Tours, Great Land Adventures and Arctic Light Gallery & Excursions offer viewing tours that include transportation and guides.
