"KAPLULAU MAUKA DAY"
IN BANNER ELK

"SPRING INTO THE MOUNTAINS"
(That's what Kaplulau Mauka means in Hawaiian)

NEXT THURSDAY - THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING!

Juanita Cable at the Bank of America in Banner Elk has
come up with a great idea to help promote tourism in the spring.

Bank of America folks on Thursday, the first day of spring, will be wearing
Hawaiian shirts and giving out Hawaiian punch and Hawaiian themed
treats all day to celebrate the first day of spring!

So Juanita Cable at the bank thought ... why not the whole town
participating in Kaplulau Mauka?  "How amazing would this be for our
Banner Elk tourists and visitors  to go into every establishment
in our town and see everyone participating in
Kaplulau Mauka day in Banner Elk," Juanita said.

Already several businesses are readying for Hawaiian-themed
"Spring Into The Mountains" so get out your Hawaiian shirt and lais!

By the way, the forecast for the first day of spring
is partly sunny and 50-degrees.

To get into the spirit of "Spring Into The Mountains" send
photos of what you will be wearing next Thursday and
we'll publish them right here for all to see! (No bikini photos!)

2nd Annual Run For Wildlife will feature
both a Half Marathon and a 5K Marathon
Runners! Register here

Come join us for the Second Annual Run for Wildlife Half Marathon on April 12. It is a beautiful run beginning at Sugar Mountain and proceeding through Banner Elk, the Lees-McRae College Campus, Matney, and ending back in Banner Elk at the Best Western Mountain Lodge where there will be live entertainment as you cross the finish line.

This is a challenging run with a couple of steep hill climbs. The finale of the run is downhill with beautiful vistas if you can raise your head to look. The race takes place at an average altitude of 3,500 feet. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. A runners luncheon will be held at the hotel after the race.

This year we will also be offering a 5K that will begin at the Best Western at 9:30am, go through Lees McRae's campus, downtown Banner Elk, and finish at the Best Western.  All participants of the 5K will receive a tee-shirt and can attend the runners luncheon.  There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Men and Women's Division.

All proceeds will benefit Lees McRae's Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education, and research. Registration will be from 12pm until 7pm on Friday April 11, 2014 at the Best Western Mountain Lodge in Banner Elk, NC.

There was a big turn out of racers and spectators at the first
race last year and the second will be bigger and better with two marathons.

That's Roy Krege, Mr. Woolly Worm, in the tie, and there is no truth to the rumor
that he will run in the Race For Wildlife this coming April 13. The race is also
sponsored by Sugar Mountain and Subway.

Flat Top uniquely has bears holding up its tables.

Nathan took the Kiwanians for a tour of his new brewery,
an establishment that will open soon in Banner Elk.
Ironically it is located where the old ABC store was and
next to the Banner Elk Police Department.
