Sisters and Brothers

As I announced on Sunday, I am currently away from the office this week and next week so that I can continue my Doctoral studies.  If you have a pastoral emergency, please contact the church office, or Helen Johnson, our Sr. Warden.  I will of course do what I can to provide support, but please be aware that I am not readily available to respond as quickly as I normally would.

I will of course, see everyone on Sunday!  I will be the celebrant in worship.  Br. Ray will be our preacher.  As a reminder, we not only have our Annual Parish Meeting - which I hope you will attend - but we'll be celebrating the sacrament of Baptism.

See ya soon!

Shalom

Fr. Dewayne

Annual Parish Meeting and Potluck

Our Annual Parish Meeting and Parish Potluck is this Sunday!  Besides hearing a presentation summarizing what we've accomplished as a parish in 2017, we'll be electing 3 Vestry members and 2 Lay Delegates as well as approving the 2018 Budget.

Fried chicken will be provided.  Folks are invited to bring a favorite side dish to make it a real feast!  The meeting will begin immediately following worship.

Your Vestry Nominees!

One of the most important agenda items for our Annual Parish Meeting this Sunday will be to elect new members to serve on our Vestry .  We have 3 folks who have agreed to stand for election, but we would like to have 4 or more. These members have agreed to candidacy:

Marke Burroughs (has served previously)
Gary Hughes ( will become a member on Jan 7th)
Marie Welden (has served previously)

Bill Carpenter and Andy Kinslow are "maybes".

Please thank these folks for volunteering to serve, and you might urge Bill and Andy to consider saying "yes"!

Lay Delegates for 2018 and 2019 Needed!

This year, we NEED to elect 2 Lay Delegates and 1 Alternate to serve in 2018 and 2019.  We know for sure that our Communion's Holy Synod will be held in Phoenix in September 2018.

If you are willing to stand for election as a Lay Delegate or Alternate, please contact our Sr. Warden, Helen Johnson.

Reflections from a previous Lay Delegate

In 2016, after volunteering for the Vestry to fill Michael Surbaugh's unexpired term on the Vestry, I went ahead and volunteered to be a lay delegate for the 2016 ECC Synod.  I didn't know what I was going to be getting into, but I am glad I was there.  I got to meet so many wonderful people from other parishes.  Soon many were coming up to me saying, "Hi Helen," even though I had not met them before that moment. Even though I have problems remembering names that go with faces, I remember faces and I expect to see many again at the next synod.

We had many discussion groups, which provided lots of good information.

I got to experience different types of communion (mass) as practiced by other parishes (the use of grape juice instead of wine for those who do not drink, the use of real flat bread instead of wafers).  All of this reinforced the camaraderie of everyone present.

We got to help determine the path the ECC was going to take for the future.

I even got to explain why our parish and others in the mid-west were wanting to form a diocese and tried to explain that this was a bubble up movement rather than an enforced mandated decision from above like some groups have.  Hopefully I planted a seed in their minds that a diocese can be a good thing as opposed to what they experienced before they became members of the ECC.

I was taught by the Marine Corps never to volunteer, but I am glad I disobeyed that directive, so much that I want to go back to the 2018 synod!

Scripture Readings for Sunday
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

God shall give strength to the people;
God shall give the people the blessing of peace

  Acts 19:1-7

Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Mark 1:4-11

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Winter Weather
Church Closing Notice

If, due to weather conditions, Fr. Dewayne and the Vestry determine that it is unsafe to hold services, an announcement will go out via these methods:

(1)   Our Church app;
(2)  Our Facebook page;
(3)    Our website - please see the gold "Announcement" block at the top right hand side of the page.
(4)    KRMG. KRMG will share our information on-air, online, on the KRMG App, and with sister stations KWEN-K95.5FM, KRAV-MIX 96, and KJSR-Eagle 103.3.

Assuming that there is power and the internet is working, we will try to send out a blast email to everyone through our Power Church database program.

If winter weather has you wondering if our doors are open, please consult one of those sources to find the answer. As always, you must determine if it's safe to make the trip--even if we are open. Be safe!
