Sisters and brothers:

For many years it has been our tradition to honor St. Francis and celebrate the beauty of creation on the first Sunday of October. I hope you and your furry, scaled and winged friends might consider joining us for worship this Sunday. It is always a special, joyful, (and often noisy!) worship experience.  And it is one that many find very meaningful.

As you know Theo is serving here as our "seminarian." When he first heard about our St. Francis Sunday he was surprised and perhaps even a bit taken aback.  "You let folks bring their pets to church?" he asked.  It is a strange concept to some.  But why not?  Does God not love all of creation?  Didn't St. Francis preach to the animals?  Don't we behold God's glory in our four-legged companions?

Hope to see you (and your critter friends) on Sunday!

Blessings!

Fr. Dewayne

Scripture Readings for Sunday-
Creation Sunday

Let us praise your name O God, *
for your name only is exalted; your splendor is over earth and heaven.

For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God...
[W]ho hopes for what is seen?  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life...,
Look at the birds of the air; Consider the lilies of the field...
[D]o not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'  [I]ndeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
But strive first for the realm of God and God's righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.

Help Our
Brothers and Sisters
Dealing with Catastrophe
Their distress continues; our attention and compassion must not flag!

The devastating disasters just don't seem to be letting up. We all continue to be struck by the severity of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes and their effects on so many people. We see the destruction on the evening news, and feel helpless.

So, while we can't all be there to  hand out supplies and help with rebuilding and recovery, there are organizations there that are trained to do that work. They just need financial support. Obviously their funds have been hit hard in the last month!

Please consider donating through Episcopal Relief and Development.

Please indicate that you are donating as a member of St. Jerome's Parish - Ecumenical Catholic Communion - as a way to help link the ECC and the Episcopal Church in partnership.

And bless you for your compassion and generosity.

October 1: St. Francis Sunday-
 Creation Sunday with Pet  Blessings

The focus of next Sunday's service (October 1) will be God's creation--the earth and all that's in it. It is customary here at St. Jerome Church to bless our pets on this Sunday. If you want to bring your precious ones to this service for a blessing, please take the next few days to prepare them for their special trip. Make sure they're freshly bathed and groomed--just like their human friends!

Also, there is a time in the service when we name the dear ones who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the last year. Please call the office by Thursday to have your pet's name added to the list. For the ones who died before October 2016, please bring a photo (or some other memento) that can be placed near the altar before the service. In this way, they too will be included during the service at the time of remembering.

As a reminder, if you sweet furry critter gets a bit excited and makes a mess, you are responsible for cleaning it up.  Sprays and paper towels will be available.

Church Clean-up Day Next Saturday

We have scheduled our periodic Church Clean-up Day for Saturday, October 7th.  We have many chores to do: sanding, staining, varnishing, vacuuming, washing, dusting, polishing, and some light maintenance.  A sign-up sheet can be found in the Fellowship Hall for those who wish to volunteer for a specific task.  This is one way to contribute of your Time, Talent, & Treasure--in this case, it's your time--and we'd really appreciate it. Many hands make for lighter work! Work begins at 9:00 a.m. See you there!

Christmas Eve Survey

We've heard from a number of you and have found the survey helpful.  Thank you for taking the time and effort!  If you haven't yet done so, please take a moment to take the Christmas Eve Survey.  The survey will end soon.

Membership Classes?

Have you been attending church here for a while and are now interested in becoming a member?  Do you have questions about who we are as a parish, what we believe as Christians, and how we function as a community?  Then membership classes might just be for you!

If you want more information about upcoming classes, please contact Fr. Dewayne (revdewayne@outlook.com).  Once a list of participants is finalized, we'll work on getting the classes scheduled - hopefully at a time that will fit most people's schedules.

Prayer for Church Growth and Attendance

God, you are the source of life and growth.  Pour out your Spirit upon us that we may grow together in wisdom, love, devotion, and faithfulness. Stir up within us a desire to draw closer as one family. Give us a yearning for outreach, that we may serve a hurting world; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.   Amen.
