Statement of Purpose:

Art of Health and Healing within CCHS improves the health, wellness, and experience of healthcare for our patients, families, staff, and greater community through creative programs and healing environments.

Goals:

1)  To improve community wellness through the arts and creative programs

2)  To engage, support, and empower staff through the arts, creative opportunities, and education

3)  To create a culture and healing environment in which the arts are accessible and engage everyone

CCHS Rehab Dept Welcomes two new Expressive Arts Therapy supervisors

Along with the oversight of Phil Weglarz, we have hired two new Expressive Arts Therapy (EXT) supervisors. Both have received their Marriage & Family Therapy training at CA Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco.

Patricia Rojas Zambrano

  • Extensive experience providing clinical supervision on issues of community mental health (including Familias Unidas in Richmond), with a particular concentration on trauma.
  • Brings teaching and group facilitation experience at JFK, CIIS, and Sofia University
  • Research experience - issues of social change, community development, child development, culture, education, and neuropsychology.
  • Art Journaling Workshops - Founder www.artjournalingworkshops.com

Suraya Susana Keating

In addition to an EXT, Suraya is a Registered Drama Therapist, Registered Yoga Teacher, and Adjunct Professor at CIIS and instructor at JFK. Suraya has extensive experience facilitating body-based expressive arts and drama therapy groups with youth, adults and prison inmates.  Suraya directs two shows per year for Marin Shakespeare Company at San Quentin State Prison. Co-producer of the documentary film "Shakespeare in Blue," and founder of the "PlayFormance Method" for creating powerful original theater and dance productions with novice performers, Suraya offers ongoing training and consultation to teachers, therapists and group leaders who are interested in integrating expressive arts practices into their work.  Suraya has private practice in San Rafael and Berkeley, in which she integrates tools from expressive arts, yoga and coaching work to help individuals thrive. www.suraya.org

CCRMC iPOD Donation Drive

Patients at CCRMC deal with varying physical and emotional challenges. Research shows that actively playing or listening to music of patient's choice promotes positive health benefits. The CCMRMC iPod Project will make iPods available for patients' use. Each patient will receive the support of a trained professional to create their personalized music list.  Personalized music lists will provide patients with benefits that include the ability to:

  • Manage pain
  • Reduce stress
  • Enhance memory
  • Improve communication
  • Promote physical rehabilitation
  • Promote wellness

Northern California Art & Health Alliance

Alan has been leading an effort to create this network, including helping to organize a recent blast-off retreat at Commonweal. We had 40 attendees with: representatives from Stanford, JFK, UCSF, CIIS, CCHS, and Sofia University; many artists and art therapists; directors of art programs; and philanthropists. Some traveled a long distance (L.A., Greece, Florida) for this maiden voyage. It was a great start!!

We now have a Facebook page, a blog, and a membership list - and it's taking off!

For those doing work in Arts & Health, you can join our membership list at:

We are looking towards having a conference in 2014 and will continue to build the momentum.
Thank you again for everything you do - in the arts, in health, and in healing.
