"The little girl sat enthralled, carefully coloring the picture of a caterpillar sketched on her paper.
She dabbed in a dark green for the creature's first segments, then added a lime-colored segment followed by purple and yellow segments and finally another dark green.
The many crawling legs she painted a bright orange".

Remembrance Weekend 2016

Art with a Heart in Healthcare teamed with The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation  for their annual Remembrance Weekend event held in July at the Sawgrass Mariott.  The Remembrance Weekend is for families who have lost a child to cancer. These families gather to celebrate the lives of their children and embrace the healing process and emotional support for one another.

Over 30 families who have lost a child to cancer participated in this years group art project designed and facilitated by Art with a Heart in Healthcare. The piece was one of remembrance, with each family member creating an original painted glass heart.  Artist in Residence, Anne Roberts, also facilitated a special Jewelry making session for the siblings that attended the event.  Both projects represented the theme for the weekend. Volunteer Artist Spotlight

Katherine Cox
After seeing the Art with a Heart in Healthcare Express Your Selfie patient exhibit at the Jacksonville Airport when she moved here last fall to start a year-long service term with National Health Corps Florida, Katherine researched Art with a Heart in Healthcare and decided that it would be a perfect fit for volunteering.

During her time as a volunteer she liked how the patient art requests pushed her outside of her comfort zone. I was asked to draw/paint things that I normally wouldn't think of, and it forced me to grow as an artist. I also love the look on their face when I give them the final product; the children and families are always so grateful, and eager to hang it up in their room.

When asked about why she want to work with Art with a Heart in Healthcare Katherine explained that spent an extended period of time at Seattle Children's Hospital when she was about 12 years old. I remember feeling very alone and scared, and there were so many doctors and nurses that came to speak with me-- it was overwhelming. However, I remember there was a volunteer artist that came to visit one day, and she drew my portrait as a gift. I remember the calming feeling of having someone draw me, and really listen to me when I was talking. It made me feel human, and not like a sick patient.

Katherine has now moved back to the Pacific Northwest after accepting a position at Oregon Health Authority as an AmeriCorps VISTA Leader in Portland. She will be part of a county-wide wellness initiative taking a systems-approach to creating healthy communities. She hopes one day to fulfill her dream and create a holistic healing center.

Thank you Katherine for sharing your time and talents with Art with a Heart in Healthcare. We wish you all the best for the future.

"Inside The Outline"
opens at MOCA  Jacksonville

ROBIN.  Acrylic on canvas, 16x16

O ver 160 people gathered for our opening reception of
Inside The Outline  a t MOCA Jacksonville on Sunday, August, 7.  The exhibit consists of silhouettes of 26 patients at Wolfson and Nemours Children's Speciality Care.
Each artist  was asked; what makes you happy? To answer this question, patients silhouettes were sketched on a canvas and then filled with images of what makes them happy.   Patients collaborated with artists in residence to bring out there natural talent and expand their art-making skills.
The exhibit is open until December, 4 in the Florida Blue Educational Gallery at MOCA  Jacksonville.

Thank you to the First Tennessee Foundation for their continued sponsorship and to Clearly Jacksonville for donating the billboard to publicize our show.

Youth Community Art Session
 "See You at the Top"
On a hot summer day in June a team of artists from Art with Heart in Healthcare  sprinkled a little sunshine on a youth group at Orange Park High School. The program See You at the Top included close to thirty teens and their mentors. The  group enjoyed music and storytelling by AWAHIH artist in residence Ajamu Mutima  and a group art session led by Executive Director Christy  Ponder and three other members of the Art with a Heart in Healthcare team.

We look forward to working with this group again in the future.

Fall Fundraiser

Join us for dinner and a concert featuring the music of local, Kim Paige. Originally from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Kim Paige moved to Nashville in 2010 as a student at Belmont University, and signed her first publishing deal in 2011 with Young Guns Publishing. She is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter with a voice that will mesmerize the crowd and songs that will leave them wanting more. Paige has made a name for herself as a songwriter, with cuts like, "Heart First," which went on to be a number one hit in Australia. With a touch of throw-back country, a beachy kind of sway, and quirky lyrics, Paige will be a prominent player in country music for years to come. We hope you will join us for this fun night benefitting Art with a Heart!
