Thank You For Coming to the 17th Annual ArtEsteem Exhibition!
|
Hundreds attended the 17th Annual ArtEsteem Exhibition on Saturday, May 30th at the West Oakland Youth Center. The atmosphere exuded community and creativity, making a positive imprint on everyone who came through in celebration of the hard work and talent of the ArtEsteem youth. The space was transformed into a vibrant and colorful art gallery where people meandered into different corners and down hallways abounded with super hero portraits and life-sizes, dream catchers, collages, mosaics, wood cuts, metal and glass pieces, logos on skateboards, images of galaxies, and much more. Students were able, for the first time, to see their artwork on professional display for the public to view and purchase. 33 pieces were sold!

Schools represented in the Exhibition included Carl B. Munck Elementary, West Oakland Middle School, Westlake Middle School, Rudsdale High School, Street Academy, Parker Elementary, Frick Middle School, Montera Middle School, Malcolm X Academy and Prescott Elementary School. Over 300 pieces of artwork were shown and 10 students took part in a cultural drumming performance, captivating everyone in attendance with their syncopated rhythms and beats.

The pride and excitement on the faces of the youth who attended the Exhibition, performed and displayed their art, demostrated the power of events like these and their impact to transform young people's lives, fuel their dreams and kindle their hopes. Their work spoke for itself and the students knew it. The growth and positive expression, through art, that took place in the classrooms this school year is a critical and valuable experience that AHC hopes to bring to as many school districts to serve as many children and youth as possible.

A big thank you goes out to our food donors: Andronico's Community Markets, Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl Marketplace, Hi Life Pizza, Safeway, The Cheese Board Collective, Grocery Outlet, Mandela Foods Cooperative, Kingston 11 Restaurant, Ask Robert Catering Services, Arizmendi Bakery, Le Cheval Restaurant, Trader Joe's, and A Beautiful Swan Custom Catering! It made for a complete nourishing of the mind, body and soul.
Also, we are very grateful to the City of Oakland's District 3 Council Member, Lynette McElhaney for lending her staff person, Bridgette Cook, for her support of the event and efforts to make it possible. The preparation week before the show was full of excitement, life and creativity; art pieces were completed, labeled, photographed, framed and hung. Walls were painted, facilities cleaned, food prepared and alongside AHC's team, dozens of volunteers showed up to work and make the exhibition happen. We could not have done it without them. It was if by magic, everything came together right on time.
We are so proud of everyone involved in making the Exhibition as magnificent as it was. Thank you!
|
For those who were unable to make it, we hope you are able to attend the Exhibition next year and in the meantime stay connected with the ongoings of ArtEsteem and AHC!
