"I look forward to Crits and Croissants, I will ask each artist to tell the group what inspired the artwork. What is the message they want to convey? Is the art meeting the goal of the artist? I would like this to be very interactive with lots of discussion. If the artwork is not conveying the message, we will look for and discuss solutions." Read more >>

A Wave of Inspiration

With not a moment to spare before the start of school, Jackson Hole Public Artist-in-Residence Bland Hoke helped Teton County Library's facilities and IT staff install the student-designed SoundWave installation in the Teen Wing. The functional public artwork is the culminating expression of Building STEAM, a year-long collaboration between Teton County Library, Jackson Hole Public Art, pARTners and Teton County School District. A year ago, Hoke developed a practical design curriculum for students enrolled in Jackson Hole High School's FabLab led by Sammie Smith. Charged with designing a community art installation, students gained practical design experience by working together on every aspect of SoundWave's creation from defining a problem and empathizing with users to drafting solutions, prototyping their ideas to delivering a final project. After identifying three primary issues with the space - sound, space and privacy, the students proposed SoundWave, a series of study pods sheathed in contours taken from Teton topographical maps. To realize their concept, students used FabLab equipment (laser cutter, 3D printer) and visited the workshop of local carpenter Robert Palomba. From start to finish, SoundWave was designed and built in Jackson, with students leading every stage of the process.

Building STEAM was funded by the Teton County Library Foundation with support from: Walton Donor advised Fund of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, a Center of Wonder C3 grant, Peter and Susan Ordway, and the Newton Family Foundation. Project administration provided by Jackson Hole Public Art. Huge kudos to all involved in its successful installation, most particularly the students who dreamed (and designed) big.
