Ask state senators to allow speed cameras in school zones
We can't tackle Georgia's rising epidemic of pedestrian fatalities without tackling Photo-enforcement sign speeding.

If approved, Senate Bill 435  would do just that. The bill authorizes local governments to use automated speed enforcement in school zones, with fines capped at $125.

Unfortunately, state senators who oppose the bill have prevented it from moving out of committee.

Key legislators who oppose the bill include:
  • Bill Cowsert who represents Athens-Clark County
  • David Shafer, whose district includes parts of Fulton and Gwinnett counties
  • Lindsey Tippens, whose district is home to a crash that killed a school crossing guard in Cobb County
  • Renee Unterman, whose district also includes part of Gwinnett County.
Each of these districts is located in counties that use camera systems to ticket drivers who pass stopped school buses. Georgia began allowing this five years ago, which PEDS approves. Yet compared to the frequency of children being killed by speeding drivers, fatalities that result from motorists passing school buses are quite rare.

Speeding is a factor in 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in Georgia, so making it easier for communities to enforce speed limits should be a no-brainer.

Please call Senators Cowsert, Shafer, Tippens, and Unterman and ask them to approve Senate Bill 435

Law enforcement agencies have deployed this technology in more than 75 countries around the world for more than 30 years. Georgia needs to do the same.
