Opportunity for AVA Community
An amazing opportunity for the AVA community

AVA is starting one of the greatest years in its school history. We are not a new school anymore, and we are not a young school anymore. We have a great staff and administrative team. Many of our students are now on their 5th year here at AVA. It is our time to excel in the classroom and make our mark in the community. We had an amazing opportunity to experience the eclipse last week, and many of you were able to experience it with your kids and, if not, many of you had conversations about the unique experience.

We have another unique opportunity to help out our kids and the community, and it is easy for all of us to participate. The town of Castle Rock is looking at developing one of five potential park sites around the city to become an amazing new neighborhood park. One of those sites under consideration is Meadows F18 Lot 2, which happens to be the vacant field right next to the school. It would be great if this location is chosen as the site that the town will develop. The town has created an online survey where parents can share their support for the site close to AVA to be developed into a brand-new park. All we need to do as parents is go online and fill out a 7-question survey. It takes less than 5 minutes. Please take the time to sit down with your kid or kids and do this survey and explain to them why you are doing it. Explain to them the benefits it could bring to the school and also to the surrounding community. At the end of the survey please make sure you put your email address in the survey so they email you a copy of your answers. Please print off a copy of that email and send it with your kid or kids to school.

Please follow the below link to the survey. ( please be sure to select Meadows F18 Lot 2

AVA is offering a couple of incentives for parents and students. We will be giving each student an extra dress of choice day if 50% of our parents complete a survey. If 80% or more of our parents complete a survey we will offer a second dress of choice day. Finally, for parents, we are offering ½ hour of volunteer time if your family completes a survey.

Talk about a win-win scenario. The school and nearby community can benefit from a brand-new neighborhood park, the students can earn an extra dress of choice day (or two), and parents can receive volunteer hours. Please help us by taking a few moments of your time to fill out the survey.
Administrative Address
We take the fact that you entrust your children to our care very seriously, and school safety is always at the forefront of our minds. I want to take a few minutes to explain how we keep our scholars safe and to offer some helpful hints for you as a parent.

Your child will participate in at least one drill a month; this is usually a fire/evacuation drill but includes one lock-out and one lock-down. Below is a brief description of the drills that will be conducted:
  • Fire/evacuation drill: All students and staff evacuate the building to a designated location (usually the field). The hallways, classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas are all checked to ensure everyone is accounted for. Some of these drills will be announced, and a few will be a surprise. No one can enter the school during these drills. One time a year, we will evacuate to a designated off-site location.
  • Lock-out: This is how we keep student's safe when there is a threat outside of our school. All students are safely inside, and perimeter doors are locked. Business continues as usual in the school, and parents can enter with proper identification.
  • Lock-down: This is how we keep student's safe when there is a potential threat inside the building. Students will practice staying quiet and unseen, nobody leaves their classrooms, and no visitors are allowed to enter school.
Ken Trump, President of National School Safety and Security Services, offers these ideas to increase your understanding and support of school safety:
  1. Ask your students about safety drills in school.
  2. Understand that AVA has safety plans for different situations (outlined above).
  3. Know that AVA has an Incident Response Team (IRT) that meets quarterly.
  4. Be aware that AVA has a resource officer who stops in daily.
  5. Be vigilant as a parent to follow the parking, visitor, and other AVA safety procedures.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any of your safety questions.

Thank you so much!

CogAT
Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Test for Grades 3 and 5: September 12-14, 2017

All schools in Colorado have a system to identify, plan and serve gifted students. The schools in Douglas County School, including Aspen View Academy use the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), administered to all students in grades 3 and 5, as one component of the body of evidence to determine areas of strength and possible identification for gifted education.

The CogAT is comprised of three subsections:

  • Verbal: Measures a child's ability to remember and transform sequences of English words, to understand them and to make inferences and judgments about them.
  • Quantitative: Measures the child's understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships that are essential for learning mathematics.
  • Non-Verbal: Measures reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes. This reduces the impact of language on the student's score.

As indicated previously, the results of the CogAT will be used as one component of the body of evidence to help determine possible identification for gifted programming. The scores will guide efforts to adapt instructional methods and learning opportunities to the needs and abilities of the students, and may also inform placement in the Douglas County Discovery Program for gifted learners should parents choose to apply for the program.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact:

Your student's teacher or Mrs. Joni Telarico, Gifted Education Coach.
