Dear Aspen View Community,
The tragedy that occurred in South Texas recently is heartbreaking, it will take months to recover from, and many of us have been wondering how and what we can do to help. As a school community, we have reached out to Moore Elementary in Houston, one of the elementary schools that was completely flooded and had to be moved to another location just to get the kids back in school again. We have offered to help the school how ever we can and have adopted several of the classrooms.
We are collecting donations in several ways:
First, we will be collecting gift cards for the teachers to use to replace lost items and restock their classrooms. They are hoping for gift cards from Target, Walmart, and Amazon. Any donation is greatly appreciated!! The amazing thing about this is that we can use our own Scrip program to help them and our school at the same time! We will also be collecting spare change. This can be a fun task that involves our children doing something to help those in need. It's also a great opportunity to get them to clean under the couch cushions and under furniture to find any spare change lying around! However, if you would rather donate via check, please make it out to Moore Elementary.
Another reason for reaching out to another elementary school is to involve our own children in this process. So many of these Texas children spent over a week scared during a storm that never seemed to quit, some lost everything, and even returning to school is an unknown experience after everything they have been through. I encourage every family to talk to their children and encourage them to write a letter or draw a picture about anything and everything; Aspen View, Colorado, the mountains, what they did over the weekend, their hobbies, family, etc. We will then collect these and send them to the school where they will be distributed throughout. This will be a bright spot for so many children who've seen so much devastation recently, and, hopefully, this will encourage the Texas children to write back creating a pen pal program between the two schools. Through all this, the students will be able to learn more about the world around them and the difference they can make.
This is a great opportunity to put a face to all the chaos we've been seeing on television and know that we are at least helping one school community affected. There will be a box in the lobby of the school to collect gift cards, checks, letters, and drawings. (Please have your children put their names on their letters and drawings, so that we can pass along any response from Texas!) Also, there will be jars in the office for the spare change.
We are excited to show Moore Elementary lots of Aspen View love.

Hello AVA Families!
Priority for PreK goes to founding families, staff, and siblings of currently enrolled AVA students. You are welcome to head down to PreK and take a look at what we are busy doing. After school is the best time. No appointment needed to stop by for a peek, but please let the front office know at the time of your visit. If you have any questions, please look at my

Student Safety During Drop Off
- Students of any grade should not be dropped off prior to 7:40am (with the exception of students enrolled in AVA's Before Care Program).
- Elementary students who are siblings of middle school students or who carpool with middle school students may enter the building with their middle school siblings/carpool as early as 7:40am.
- Elementary students who do not need to arrive with a middle school student may be dropped off as early as 8am.
Please DO NOT drop off your student(s) early. Even if there are staff members outside, they are out there to help students get safely into the building. They are not outside to supervise students playing out in front of the building until the doors open.
-Middle School Students and their siblings-doors will open at 7:40am
-PreK and Elementary Students-doors will open at 8:00am

The AVA Foundation is excited to announce...Volunteer Appreciation
Parent Volunteers are a huge part of making our AVA's daily operations a success. Volunteering in carpool, lunch/recess duty, fundraising, and event planning are all wonderful ways parents can get involved and make a difference. Thank you for what you do to make a difference. The Aspen View Academy Foundation would like to recognize parent volunteers this year monthly as well as at the end of each trimester. We will be importing information from Infinite Campus, the directory will include the following:
- Last Name, Parents Name, Students Name(s), Address, Phone Numbers and email address
- There will also be class lists organized by grade/teacher name

We are pleased to announce our partnership with the Schoolpool program to assist parents that are interested in carpooling, walking, or biking to and from school with other AVA families. Schoolpool is sponsored by Way to Go, a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG).
The program works as follows:
- We will submit our family list to Way to Go to be imported into their secure mapping website. It will include parent and student names, grades, addresses, phone numbers and emails to be shared with other AVA families. Essentially, this is the same information provided in our student directory.
- Parents will receive an email from Way to Go informing you of the closest AVA families. If you don't have an email address, the information will be sent via U.S. Mail.
- Through a secure website, you can add comments to your account (i.e., can provide morning rides, student is in after school activities, carpool is full, etc.), search other addresses (i.e., second household, grandparents, etc.) and elect to share your information with families at other schools.
Note:
- Your information will only be shared with AVA families; Way to Go will not sell it to other businesses, agencies, or third parties. Likewise, we ask you to treat the information with privacy.
- There is no obligation to participate. The information is a great resource to meet nearby AVA families for other reasons such as temporary transportation needs, play dates, baby sitters, summer BBQs, etc.
- If you are interested in connecting with other families, you will need to take the initiative to contact families to determine interest and make arrangements.
- Add [email protected] to your address book or safe sender list to ensure your information is delivered to your inbox.
- Aspen View Academy and Way to Go assume no responsibility, but provide information for your use. Way to Go does not run background checks, confirm valid drivers' licenses or assess insurance coverage on participants. You are advised to screen participants to your personal satisfaction and check your own insurance coverage for carpooling to assure you are covered under these voluntary arrangements. Calling all 7th grade families!
 We have started planning the Washington DC and New York trip for the 2018-2019 school year! If you are interested in joining us on this incredible trip, we invite you to join us for an informational meeting on Wednesday 9/27 at 6pm in the AVA library. We will discuss an itinerary, what to expect, cost, and answer any questions you may have. After this meeting you will be able to sign up your student. Spaces are limited and are on a first come first serve basis, so you wont want to miss it!

Governing Board Opening
Per AVA Bylaws, the board will appoint a candidate to fill the remainder of the term for board seat #3 ending on May 1, 2018 at which time the seat will be up for election by AVA parents and staff.
Board Appointment Process
We have received two interested candidates for our open elected seat. Please see the links below to their Board Candidate Questionnaires.
We will be conducting a Candidate Meet and Greet and Q&A with the AVA Board during the board's working session at the September Board Meeting on September 21st with a plan of filling the seat at the October board meeting. Please contact Stephanie Rogers with any questions or additional points of clarification.
