Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C,I-Yorktown) joined a group of his colleagues today at a press conference in support of the Sensible Opportunity for Legislative Equality (SOLE) Act (A.2747).  The bill would allow each legislator to bring one bill before their respective house to be voted on without the necessity of committees.

"Initiative and referendum are issues that passed the Senate in 2001, but have never seen the light of day in the Assembly," Katz said, noting that initiative and referendum is a process that allows citizens to vote directly on pieces of legislation.  "The Assembly Majority Conference continues to be the graveyard for good legislation.  Only five Assembly Minority Conference bills have been taken up since 1974.  Albany would rather bitterly cling to power than take up issues that are important to the people of New York.  Bills will be discussed on merit and not on the whims of leadership.  The people deserve to be heard. Good legislation will be brought to the floor under the SOLE Act; for the sake of responsible government, we need this bill to pass."
