Beware of Older Adult Holiday Scams

She especially focuses on schemes that prey on people's generosity during the holiday season.

Exposing Senior and Assisted Living
In an address at a recent LeadingAge Illinois event, Randi Belisomo, a WGN reporter and the founder and President of Life Matters Media, spoke about the need to change people's perceptions of senior living and assisted living and ways that this can be accomplished.

Creating Purposeful Spaces
Deer Path of Huntley was one of the 29 entrants from throughout the United States in the 2015 design awards program sponsored by Argentum (formerly the Assisted Living Federation of America). Deer Path was designed by Gleason Architects of Sugar Grove, Illinois to serve residents 22 to 64 years of age with physical disabilities. The interior design of the affordable assisted living community features expanded spaces for socialization and activities.

Speaking Out for Supportive Living
Earlier this week, Rick Banas of Gardant Management Solutions spoke on the Illinois Supportive Living program at the 27th Annual Kane County Legislative Forum of Aging and Legislative Issues.

He talked about how the program serves as an excellent model for affordable assisted living and how it benefits older adults of all incomes and their families, the state budget and taxpayers.

Dim Views of Aging and Alzheimer's Disease
New research suggests that young and middle-aged adults who have negative views of aging may face a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life, says a report by HealthDay reporter Alan Mozes that was posted on U.S. News and World Report HEALTH.

Better Memory Linked to Physical Activity
Physical activity is strongly connected to better cognition among older adults, notes a story posted on the Medical News Today website about a study that was published in the Journal of International Neuropsychology. The study indicates that older adults who take more steps score better on memory tests than their peers who are more sedentary.

Can Senior Housing Crystal Ball Baby Boomers?
Based on comments made by speakers at the Chicagoland Senior Housing Conference, can the senior living industry really know today what Baby Boomers will want, need and be able to afford when they start reaching the age when people start moving into senior living and assisted living communities?

Falls Aren't Inevitable
Falls are not a normal part of aging, yet statistics show that one-third of those 65 and older fall each year and falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among older Americans. Tips for older adults and caregivers on preventing falls are available from the National Council on Aging.

Beating the Holiday Blues
Unfortunately for all too many, the winter holidays is a season of sadness, anger and anxiety rather than joy, love and contentment. A blog posted on the Visiting Angels website cites 10 Tips for Fighting the Holiday Blues.

Four Gardant Communities Honored by LeadingAge Illinois
Four assisted living communities managed by Gardant were honored by LeadingAge Illinois for political advocacy.

Heritage Woods of McHenry, Heritage Woods of McLeansboro, Heritage Woods of Mt. Vernon, and Heritage Woods of Rockford were recognized with political advocacy awards at the association's Legislative Luncheon on Dec. 4.

Winter and Seniors
Older adults are among those who are especially vulnerable to winter weather. They often generate less body heat because of slower metabolisms and less physical activity. In addition, certain chronic health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, Parkinson's disease, and arthritis and some prescription and over-the-counter medications can make it harder for your body to stay warm.

An informational booklet on staying safe in cold weather is available at no cost from the National Institute on Aging.
