Pledge Allegiance to Local Food!
Local Food Pledge

Local Food is food produced within the "local foodshed' in the Central Ohio River Valley Watershed within 100 miles of Cincinnati.

Making a 10% shift in buying or producing local food does not mean all of your food has to be local. It just means shifting what you currently eat to include 10% more locally grown and/or produced food.

If 10% of the regional population takes the pledge it will result in over $49,000,000 infused into the local economy and 544 local jobs!  Plus, it's better for the environment and a healthier option.

Click here to take the Pledge and learn more about it and Green Umbrella.

Greetings!

Please find our farmers in their same location until November 10.  After that, you'll find them on Saturday closer to the store.  Wednesdays we'll continue to provide the market year round inside The Party Source.

Supporting our local farmers provides you with healthy tasty food, builds relationships, is fun, is a way to learn about what to do with local food, supports our local economy, is environmentally friendly and so much more.  Visit the market and find out more.

The Farm at Holiday Harbor
Transition
spaghetti squash

This week The Farm at Holiday Harbor enjoyed beautiful, blustery days  with the sun shining and the birds singing while they harvested an abundance of beans!  Never before have they seen such beautiful spaghetti squash!  And the acorn and butternut squash are as beautiful and tasty as well.   We still have lots of hot and sweet peppers and a few watermelons.  And, they still have a few tomatoes, too!

Hope to see lots of our wonderful regular customers and new ones as well!

Don't know what to do with spaghetti squash?  Well read on, it's easy and versatile.

COOKING: You can bake it whole (be sure to pierce it several times to avoid an explosion)at 375 for an hour to an hour and a half until tender.  Or put your pierced squash in a crock pot for 8 to 9 hours.  You can also boil it 20 to 30 minutes until tender.

Once the squash is cool enough to handle, cut it off and remove the seeds and pulp.  Then, simply run a fork the length of the squash through the flesh separating it into strands.  It also freezes well.

it's delicious with butter, salt and pepper or your favorite pasta sauce or toppings.

Shady Grove Farm
WHERE'S THE BEEF?
Squash blossoms
Squash blossoms!

No frost last week! Yaaaay! Nancy can't believe she's still harvesting baby squash. And, picking beans to cure and shell. And sowing - turnips and mustards that, if this Winter is anything like last, will make a Spring crop.

This week at Shady Grove's stand, look for pasture-raised USDA beef and goat meat. Many delicious cuts still available. Special: 5% discount on beef quantities: E-mail for specifics.   shadygrovefarm@wkybb.net

From the garden: amazingly, baby summer squash: Squash Blossoms (first AND last of the Fall season) limited cherry and San Marzano tomatoes: poblano, anaheim & cayenne chiles: tomatillos: rose heart and black Spanish radishes: curly and black mustard greens: the last sweet basil (cause she is not gonna scramble to cover it one more time), cilantro, rosemary & bay leaf.

Nancy's last day in the Party Source parking lot: November 10. After that, she will be taking orders for Holiday wreaths of natural greenery, for delivery on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, ONLY. Details in my next newsletter.

Fall Fancies

Kenny's Cheese
Greensleeves returns with more delicious, aromatic, gorgeous Fresh Pink Ginger!  Also, fresh greens and spinach, beautiful lettuces in cool-crisped colors, colorful sweet peppers, and a few more of the Jewel strawberries, all potted up for you to overwinter.

Here's how to "heel" your strawberries:  keeping them in the pot, place them into a trench or hole almost as deep as they are, fill back in with the dirt, cover entire plant with several inches of straw or leaves), after uncovering them in the early spring and planting them, you will have your very own organic strawberries to relish in early June!

Salads aren't just for summer!  Be creative with colors, textures, and flavors starting with our lettuces and peppers.  Consider adding:
 - Kenny's Cheese (we have a nice selection of styles of this great Kentucky-made cheese).
 - Since it's squash season, top your salad with roasted squash and/or root vegetables.
- Hazelnuts or other nuts add crunch and protein
- Dried or fresh fruit add a nice contrast.
- Bacon, slices of beef, eggs, chicken...it's a great way to make a meal in one dish.
- Try our beautiful ginger to make a salad dressing or stir fry your meat and vegetable selections.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK:  Makes "Scents"
Most air fresheners are laced with artificial  perfumes and unhealthy chemicals that actually pollute the air.  Ninety-five percent of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic petrochemicals.

A good rule of thumb  to follow is that if the product you're considering doesn't give you a list of ingredients, don't buy it.

Essential oils and soy tarts and candles are a great, greener way to freshen your space.

Our Mother's Garden
New Soaps and a Chance to Win a Gift Basket!
September at Our Mother's Garden

Irene is on a soap making roll, gearing up for the Christmas Holiday Season.  Her soaps are made in small batches; only 24 bars per batch.  She adds a different extra moisturizer like Shea butter, almond butter, jojoba, and more to each batch.   Each batch takes four to six weeks to cure and be ready for wrapping and then to the market.  So, supplies of Fall and Holiday Soaps will be limited!  The inventory of soaps that are available now will be discounted until the end of the Farmers' Market season for just $5 per bar!  When they are gone, they are gone.  Don't miss out on these luxurious handcrafted soaps!   Fall  and Holiday Soaps will be available sometime later in November.   More next time on what will be available.  Visit the Bellevue Farmers' Market and Shop Bellevue!
