Journey Into the Human Mind

Sun June 10 @ 2:30pm - TIME CHANGE
Art Theatre of Long Beach

 Journey2

We have moved the event to 2:30pm, so now you can enjoy a leisurely lunch, and as dessert, join us for a fascinating trip into the human psyche.

UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Kenneth B. Wells will delve into the details of the so-called visual agnosia.  He will discuss how any man could mistake his wife for a hat.

Wells, along with being a Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, has been composing  since the age of 12, including two operas. This combination of scientific expertise and passion for opera will provide a unique insight into the human mind in order to examine the mental progression of Dr. P throughout the opera.

The cast comprised of Suzan Hanson, Robin Buck and John Duykers will accompany Wells with excerpts from the opera. Purchase Tickets

ManHat

An investigation into the world of a man, Dr. P, with visual agnosia, or 'mental blindness' due to damage of the visual parts of the brain.  Such patients 'see but do not see.'  They see colors, lines, boundaries, simple shapes, patterns, movement-but they are unable to recognize, or find sense in, what they see.  They cannot recognize people or places or common objects.  They visual world is no longer meaningful or familiar, but strange, abstract, chaotic, mystifying.  In the case of Dr. P, a gifted performer, his exceptional musical ability allows him, in large measure, to return sense to the world by putting it and his actions into music.
