Audubon Newsletter: 2015-2016, Volume 17
 Message from Principal Duffy
Greetings Audubon Community,

From Starved Rock to a specialized tour of Motorola to Hunting for Crayfish--our kids have had a wonderful two weeks filled with tons of learning experiences! Additionally, we celebrated the arts in a variety of ways the last two weeks.  We recognized Pulitzer Prize winning authors of our own, watched as three different levels of band students performed, and marveled in the talents of our young actors in Annie just last night. Lastly, our fabulous, young female runners ran along the lake earlier today in the annual Girls on the Run 5K.  They ran with energy and commitment alongside our volunteer, adult running buddies.

These past two weeks have also contained important announcements for our community.  First, we welcomed Mr. Chase James as our new assistant principal.  He will formally begin Monday, June 13th but has been able to visit and meet some of our community this week.  We are thrilled to have this talented, experienced thought partner join us!  Secondly, I held a Budget Forum on Tuesday to walk through our updates as a community and provide background on our school costs, should we face any reductions. I was grateful to the captive audience that was able to join on a rainy night and provide both encouragement, feedback, and ideas.  While this was just the first conversation around our budget, I will continue to hear feedback and provide a review of the slides again this Wednesday at our Local School Meeting.  I will also inform the community as I receive any news directly related to our budget.   Please click here to view the slides reviewed on Tuesday; please note that costs/scenarios listed are in no particular order and are meant to just provide overall cost structure of school supports.  My hope is that we do not need to consider any of these reductions.   At this point, like I have communicated along the way, let us together remain calm and prepared, focused on the end of the year educational experience for our kids.

In the next two weeks we wrap up learning with culminating events such as the 5th grade Rube Goldberg Design Challenge.  We also have family picnics within our primary classrooms to celebrate.  Please join us Friday, June 10th at 8am for a thank you to our parents and families hosted by Friends of Audubon outside in the garden. This thank you coffee is to acknowledge, with gratitude, your time and generous donations towards our school.  As you saw this week through email, signs and balloons, we reached our goal of 150 families donating to our school in the most recent drive! Thank you on behalf of our kids, educators, and community. Our community strength continues to empower me as your leader, and for that, I thank you.

Ms. Duffy

Our actors and actresses just following their wonderful, talented performance of Annie! Please be on the look out on how to sign up for the fall performance of James and the Giant Peach.
Our young, determined female runners just before their BIG race along with their motivating coaches: Coach Glass, Coach Taylor, Coach Nancy, Coach Amy, and Coach Annemarie (a community volunteer).

Audubon Cares Club Delivers Plants to Seniors

The members of the Audubon Cares Club painted pots and planted flowers, which were then delivered to residents at the Mary Hartwell Apartments. They were greatly appreciated by Davida, the resident service coordinator. She used them as center pieces for an event, and then residents were able to take the plants home with them.

Student Enrichment Opportunities

Roscoe Village has a kids coding school!
Computers
If your kids can't get enough of their technology classes with Ms. Bowens, it may be time to extend that passion with after school coding classes.

Power Up Tech Academy is a locally owned business that offers kids coding classes for grades K through 8th. It is located at 2867 N Clybourn Ave, just north of Diversey.

Classes allow kids to:
  • Make their own video games,
  • Use computer programming to create art and music,
  • Develop custom Minecraft plug-ins
  • ...and more!
The groups are small so that each child can choose projects that they are excited about, and get individualized coaching and help along the way. This also allows students to move ahead quickly and take on new challenges if they are understanding things rapidly.

Coding is an awesome creative outlet and develops an understanding of 21st century skills and career paths. Plus, kids gain confidence when they are able to show games and animations that they made themselves. Maybe your child will create the next Minecraft!

For more information about Power Up Tech Academy, call (773) 382-0778 or visit the  website .

Concordia Place School - Age 365 Summer Camp Program

Searching for a way to keep your children safe and fully engaged when school is out during the summer while you are at work?
Parents with children in our summer camp never hear complaints that their children are bored. Learning, team building, games, swimming, field trips, and creative expression are all interwoven to create a full summer of fun. Activities and projects build on each other throughout the summer, and educational workshops round out the program.
We believe that our summer camp should be a balance of time for children to relax and have fun, but also maintain the skills and knowledge that was built up throughout the school year. Through engaging, educational activities and a consistent daily routine, children can smoothly transition from the school year, to summer camp, and back to the school year.
Our full-summer program is open from 7:00am - 6:00pm, so parents can work without interruptions, while their children develop lasting friendships.

For more information contact our Student Resources Manager, Rachel Ozog at [email protected]  or (773) 463-1600, ext. 216.

Writing a student absence note is easy as 1-2-3!

When your child is absent, we ask that all absences are documented.  There are three easy ways to report an absence:
  1. Go to the Audubon website, click on the "Parents" tab, then click on "Absences."  You will find an electronic absence note that you can fill out that goes directly to our office staff.
  2. Stop by the main office and ask Ms. Glascott or Ms. Perez for a "Reason for Absence" form.  You can fill it out right there.
  3. You may write a note with the reason for your child's absence and put it in your child's folder to bring to school. As long as the child remembers to give the note to their teacher, that note will make its way down to the office.
We highly encourage parents to take advantage of option one, as it's so easy and is electronically saved for documentation purposes.

If your child has been sick for more than three days, we require a doctor's note along with the absence form that you fill out.

As a reminder, absences that are considered excused are:
  1. Student illness
  2. Death in the family
  3. Family emergency
  4. Observance of a religious holiday
*Please note that you do not need to call the school office to report your child's absence.  The electronic or paper absence form is sufficient.  We do ask that you fill these forms out as soon as possible.
