When the Olympics Came to Ojai
Sunday, August 10, 2014
4:30 - 6:00 p.m.

Thirty years ago, the Olympic canoe, kayak and rowing events graced Lake Casitas during the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games. This was the first time in over 20 years that these Olympic races were staged on a "natural" rather than an artificial course. Planning took three years. Over 36 miles of underwater cable were laid to create the racing lanes for the 13-day event. Since then, Lake Casitas is known as the place where the Olympics were held and legends were made.

Revisit the stirring events of that epic summer with moderator, Mark Lewis, and panelists:
  • Roger Conrad:  Facility Designer, LAOOC
  • Tom Horton:  Two-Time Olympic Kayaker; Co-Chair, Canoe Kayak Committee
  • Judy Pugh:  Event Volunteer
  • Alan Rains:  Protocol Manager at Lake Casitas
Find out what one truckload of trout bought and how the Olympic torch weaved its way through Ventura County.

"It was a magical time..." - Alan Rains, 1984
