Cross-Country Bike Trip to Benefit the

Philip M. Keating Fund for the Future

And what did YOU do this summer?

On May 28, 2013, a group of four fit and ambitious friends of Phil, led by his good friend Luis Gendive, Arlington travel soccer coach and native of Spain, began a cross-country bike ride to raise money for Phil's Fund. Luis, along with Seamus Hooban, Lawrence Smith Morton and Prashant Singh left Yorktown, Virginia and pedaled 4,000 miles to San Francisco, California - reaching the West Coast a day early on July 3!

Phil's Fund supports local charities and causes that Phil devoted his time and energy to: youth soccer and basketball, school's character education, Arlington Chamber of Commerce and citizen legal assistance. Phil's Fund was established at the Arlington Community Foundation upon his sudden death at age 51 in January 2011.

The riders kept a trip blog for their friends, family and fans to follow the team's progress. The bike trip was covered in the Arlington Sun Gazette. The team raised close to $8,000 - it's not too late to help them reach their goal of $10,000 by making a donation today.

Contributions may be made online by clicking here and designating "Phil's Fund Bike Trip."

Please visit the riders' blog and Facebook group

Caroline and Patrick Keating and their mom Erin Devine send off the riders on May 27th!
The finish line - San Francisco, CA - July 3, 2013!

NextGenNow Member Profile: Kevin Shooshan, The Shooshan Company
"NextGenNow is about one thing to me: getting right to the point and helping those in need, today! Every day of my life I feel so fortunate to do what I do in one of the best areas of the world, and I want those whom are less fortunate to have the opportunity to achieve their maximum level of success. Through my work with the Arlington Community Foundation, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and Doorways for Women and Families, I have seen firsthand how much just a little financial support can make such a significant difference in someone's life. NextGenNow will be a real difference-maker in the years to come, and I look forward to working with others who share this vision". - Kevin Shooshan

Kevin Shooshan, along with Susan Anderson, are the co-chairs of NextGenNow, an initiative for people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond that offers an affordable way to leverage charitable contributions with that of other young professionals and leaders to support local nonprofits.

Leaders and Volunteers Needed for Field of Interest Funds
Following a strategic assessment of community needs, the Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of several new Field of Interest Funds (FOI), which will enable donors to specify a particular area of impact for their giving and offer them the assurance that their gifts will achieve maximum benefit through the work of each fund's advisory committee. Volunteer-led committees will identify priorities, raise awareness and support and make recommendations for annual grant-making.

To learn more or to volunteer for a FOI committee, contact us at info@arlcf.org or 703-243-4785.

Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative
Members of ACF's Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative (AYPI) recently led two workshops for the 28 rising high school juniors and seniors taking part in Leadership Arlington's Youth Program (LAYP), a two week program which seeks to enhance leadership skills and awareness of the need for philanthropy, community service and civic participation among its participants. AYPI chair Rebecca Yohannes and vice-chair
JP Degross (both Washington-Lee '15) led sessions on how AYPI has enabled middle school and high school students to act as change-makers in their communities by connecting their interests with community needs in creative and effective ways.

Also present to share their experiences were high school students who had worked with AYPI to develop significant projects: DC Style, a fashion show that raised money for college scholarships, organized by Caroline Helfgott and Bradley Johnson; and Steps for College Success, a student-organized college preparation fair for minority students led by Marisela Lara, Shalma Akther and Jhonn Guzman.

For more information about AYPI and opportunities to get involved, email AYPI@arlcf.org. For more information about Leadership Arlington's Youth Program, please click here.
