A report on PanIIT PLC Meet in Washington DC

By Roy da Silva, Executive Director

On July 19th 2003 , a group of IIT-ians held the first formal Pan IIT strategy meet at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara. Ten years later, it is time to review our progress and set the direction for Pan IIT Inc. for the next decade by creating a Strategic Plan for PanIIT Inc. that serves as the blue print that steers execution by the incoming Presidents and their teams, who typically have a 2 year term. To be able to collect inputs, that shall go into developing the plan, from as many passionate alums across the country, three Pan IIT Strategy meetings are planned. The first meeting was held on May 18th 2013 , in Silicon Valley. The second meeting was held in Washington D.C on September 6th and the third such meeting shall take place in Houston in December 2013. Here is a summary of what transpired in Washington D.C Paniit Inc's.Strategy Meet (East Coast) was held in Washington DC on Friday September 6th., and passionate alums, who were unable to attend on Friday, had the opportunity to provide their inputs on Saturday, and Monday at follow up, mini meetings. . In attendance, were over 40 alums, some of which included pioneers, such as Rajat Gupta and Monishi Sanyal, to name a few, past and present members of the PanIIT Board, past Global Conference chairs, and prominent and passionate alumni who are keen to see PanIIT accelerate in the decade ahead. The Chairman, the President and the Executive Director shared with the DAs the current accomplishments , desire to be the best alumni organization , and invited discussion on the direction PanIIT USA, should take in the next decade which included, * The PanIIT Mission (Alumni Services to be accelerated, Branding to be maintained ) * Vehicles for providing alumni services ( Mentorship programs, Fostering Technical entreprenuership at conferences , etc) * Branding Vehicles (reviving re-positioning (magazine versus journal) and declaring Pi-Tech. the official publication of Paniit Inc, Focusing the PanIIT Conferences on Professional/ Entreprenuerial /Networking) * Networking (How to engage, young alums (by creating ' Welcome Programs'), spouses ( by creating spousal committees), 'alums in academia', young entreprenuers), * How PanIIT Inc., (501 c6) and Wheels Inc (501c3) can collaborate, to provide an avenue for alums to 'give back' to communities in US and India. * "Infrastructure and sustainability" (Offices, Staffing, Database ) * Expanding the scope of Pan IIT Programs to include other segments of the Professional, Academic, Entrepreneurial, Social Community.) Rajat Gupta closed the Saturday meeting with an inspirational speech that reminded us of our strength in numbers, and encouraged us to organize this strength to make it easy for an alums to connect with each other, to benefit from each others experience. He reminded us that we should be proud of our accomplishments as we are only 10 years old, compared to leading Alumni organizations from US universities, which are over 100 years old, and reminded us that. as long as we have the passion, drive to succeed, and desire to help each other, we will soon become a leading alumni organization. The Friday event was hosted by Capital IIT. Saturday morning Golf event was hosted by Debu Ghosh and Vijay Chaudhary at the Bretton Woods Country Club, a scenic golf course overlooking the Potomac River. The Saturday Evening Event was hosted by Sharad and Mahinder Tak, and Monday's meeting with Vinod Gupta was facilitated by Raj Dave and San Sengupta. PanIIT Inc, places on record our sincere appreciation for their support.

Get to know Raghu Rajan, the second-youngest Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

  null

How does an IIT boy become one of the biggest names in economics? In a way, Rajan's story illustrates the dramatic rise of a brilliant, IIT educated engineer; in another, it is an increasingly common story about the superlative competence of an IIT student in whatever field he (or she) wishes to apply himself (or herself) to.

The IITian.com traces this fascinating career path, from the classrooms of IIT Delhi in the 80s, to the halls of power within two decades.

Born to a family with an IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officer, Rajan's childhood was spent in schools in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Belgium. After his return to India, he spent the rest of his school years in the acclaimed Delhi Public School, graduating right into one of the top colleges in the country - IIT Delhi.

The 40 transfers of Ashok Khemka (IITKgp84), IAS

null

In his 22 year s of service as an IAS officer in Haryana, Ashok Khemka has been transferred over 40 times. The longest he has spent at a single post has been fifteen months; the shortest, scant weeks.

A graduate of IIT-Kharagpur 1984 batch, Mr. Khemka holds both a Ph.D and an MBA, and is a 1991 batch IAS officer. His education is superlative, and yet 20 of his many transfers have occurred during the last eight years of the BS Hooda led Haryana government. Ashok Khemka is a fascinating riddle, and in many ways a parable that illustrates the nature of our government.

IIT KGP Ready to Roll out India's First Robotic Car by 2014
| BY NANDINI GUHA

Kolkata - India's first fully operational self-driving car will debut soon, thanks to scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur (IIT KGP). Well past the design stage, the Eklavya 2.0 should be ready to drive - without a driver at the helm - by early next year.

According to Srinivas Reddy, team leader of the car project, three kinds of operations are being looked at: mining, agriculture and automobiles. The first two applications will be fully automatic, but as a driverless automobile, the Eklavya 2.0 will operate like a normal car with a human being at the wheel, which can be switched into auto mode, said Reddy.

A Toymaker's Dream:
Arvind Gupta (IITKgp71) and education
null In contrast to the trajectory that most IITians choose, Arvind Gupta decided to leave his mark on the world not from the top, but the very bottom.

His fascination with toys and their endless possibilities began from childhood, when deprived of the usual plastic amusements of boys, he began constructing his own. His preference for action over discourse strengthened during his years at IIT Kharagpur, where he joined a political group, SAHYOG, and started teaching the children of the campus workers.
