AUGUST COALITION MEETING

Coalition members shared topics and presenters they'd like as key speakers at upcoming meetings.

Coalition members tried to keep their balloon "teen" successfully up in the air. With a concrete plan, the community can keep all youth thriving and staying afloat.

Coalition members met in groups and discussed the revised Year 2 Action Plan that was created based on the July 8 meeting.

BACK TO SCHOOL:
SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS

Getting ready for the upcoming school year isn't all about notebooks, brand-new clothes and lunchboxes. It's also about preparing your child for a new transition and laying the foundation for good communication.

Questions about drugs and alcohol will inevitably come up during the school as your teen meets different friends, encounters unfamiliar social situations and is exposed to pop culture and media.

EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS

A Message from Richard Porth  President/CEO of United Way of Connecticut

September is Attendance Awareness Month, which is part of an ongoing campaign to address chronic school absence and give yo
ung people the best chance at success in their adult life.

Nearly one-in-ten students nationwide are chronically absent from
school, which is defined as missing 10 percent or more of the
school year for any reason (excused or unexcused absences).

Making school attendance a priority while kids are in early grades prepares them to thrive in later grades, college, and their future careers.

United Ways in Connecticut and their partners in the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading will be raising awareness about the importance of school attendance throughout the month of September. To be involved with Attendance Awareness Month activities or the Campaign for Grade-Level reading in your community, contact your local United Way.
